Portofino, Liguria
What planning a pet funeral in Portofino is like
Pet bereavement is taken more seriously in Italy than it was a generation ago, and counsellors in Genoa and online groups offer support in Italian and English. If the sadness has not eased after a few weeks, it is fine to ask for help. Children often find comfort in choosing a shell or smooth stone from the shore to keep with the urn.
In a village of a few hundred people, the cat on the harbour wall or the bird singing in a window is known to everyone, and a loss is felt by more than one household. A quiet farewell at home is usual, sometimes followed by a few words with neighbours in the piazzetta or a candle lit in one of the village churches.
In-home vets are fewer around smaller places like Portofino, and one may cover a wide area, so a home goodbye often needs booking several days ahead. If timing is uncertain, ask your usual clinic whether they'd visit in an emergency, or whether they have a side room with its own door so you can avoid the waiting room.
With roughly 400 residents, Portofino is the 2nd-largest of the 2 Liguria communities we cover. Genoa, roughly 15 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Portofino run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Genoa (15 miles, a larger centre), Milan (80 miles, a larger centre) and Turin (92 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Portofino routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

What local burial and cremation customs suggest
In communities where burial is still the norm, like Italy at about 38.16%[1] cremated, sitting up with the body before a funeral is a remembered custom for some families. A short version works for a pet: keep them on their bed in a cool room for an evening so relatives can drop by, then bury or hand over in the morning. In warm weather, keep it to a few hours.
That Italy rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Portofino only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
When the weather shapes the goodbye
Local weather affects two things about a pet funeral: how long a home goodbye can last, and whether an outdoor burial, planting or scattering is practical this week. Providers in Portofino know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest now, and whether a viewing room is available if the weather is poor.

What a pet funeral costs in Portofino
In Portofino, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium. You can also contact a crematorium or pet cemetery directly, which is the easiest way to ask about a farewell room or an attended service. Always ask for individual cremation by name if you want the ashes back.

What you can and can't do in Liguria
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug stays in the body, and wildlife or other animals can be poisoned if a grave is dug up. That risk is one reason home burial is regulated at all, and why a well-covered grave or cremation matters. Here's what Liguria says.
In Italy, some pet crematoria offer electronic tracing and a certificate, and at least one lets families watch an individual cremation on a monitor on request. Ask whether that's possible if you'd like to be present without standing by the chamber.
Your checklist for the first day
- Choose a day while your pet still has good moments, book the home visit, and settle the aftercare plan in the same phone call.
- Fill the days before with small favorites: a slow walk, a patch of sun, the treat that's usually off limits.
- Decide who will hold your pet and who would rather wait in another room. Staying and stepping out are equally loving, and no one should be pushed either way.
- Set out the blanket you're happy to send with them, with any drawing, note or toy that should go into the cremation or grave too.
- When the vet has finished, take as long as you need. The collection can wait an hour; ask them to step outside if you want privacy.
- Walk out to the car or van with your pet should you want to. Teams often carry pets on a basket or stretcher and are glad to let you take one end.
After the farewell: ways to keep the memory close
Many homes in Portofino are used only part of the year, and owners come and go between Milan, Genoa, Switzerland and further afield. Losing a pet while in transit or during a short stay can feel disorienting. It helps to keep the ashes with you and decide on a memorial once you are settled, rather than feeling rushed to choose before leaving.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Italy?
For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Portofino follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Genoa to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Genoa (roughly 15 miles from Portofino) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Portofino?
The closest communities we cover are Genoa (about 15 miles), Milan (about 80 miles) and Turin (about 92 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Portofino too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Should my other pets see the body before the farewell?
Many owners let them, and it rarely does harm. Give your other dog or cat a few calm minutes to sniff and walk away in their own time. Some show little interest; others seem to search the house less afterwards. There's no evidence it's required, so if it feels wrong for your household, skip it. Keep routines steady for the animals left behind in the days that follow.
What do you say at a pet's funeral?
Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.
Can I have a religious blessing at my pet's farewell?
Yes. Many clergy will say a short blessing for an animal if asked, at home or by a grave, and some pet cemeteries can suggest a celebrant. Start with your own faith community. In Japan, some pet memorial parks include chanting by a monk at a witnessed cremation, which shows how naturally faith and pet funerals can sit together.
