Edmonton, Alberta
Where a goodbye can happen in Edmonton
Children in Edmonton often grow up with pets as winter companions, and on acreages around the city with farm animals and 4-H projects too, so losing one can be their first experience of death. Invite them to the farewell, let them pick a drawing or a small toy to go with the pet, and answer what they ask in plain words. If grief lingers into the spring, your vet or a counsellor can help.
Many Edmonton residents came to Alberta for work in the energy industry and elsewhere and live far from family. A pet may have been the one companion through several moves or long rotations away. Friends who have never had that bond may not understand how hard the loss lands. Tell a coworker or neighbour what has happened, and consider inviting one or two people to a small farewell so you are not alone with it.
With a long list of providers around Edmonton, the risk is comparing the wrong things. Price matters, but so do three quieter questions: will your pet be cremated alone, can you spend time with them before it happens, and how will the ashes come back to you? Put the same three to two or three places and the right one usually stands out.
Edmonton's population is around 1,010,000, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Alberta communities we cover.

What local funeral habits mean for your pet
About 81.1%[1] of people in Canada are cremated, so most families here have been to a cremation service and know how one feels. That familiarity carries over to pets: a viewing before cremation, a few words said and ashes brought home is a pattern people recognise. It also means crematories are well established, and a farewell room or witnessed cremation is easier to find.
We take the Canada rate from CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Edmonton, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
When the weather shapes the goodbye
Whatever the forecast in Edmonton, have a sheltered spot ready for the moment your pet is carried from the house to the waiting vehicle: a porch, a garage, even a large umbrella. Rain or glare on the doorstep turns a careful handover into a rushed one, and it's the moment many people remember most clearly.

The real cost of a pet goodbye in Edmonton
Across Canada, most families arrange aftercare through their vet, but crematories and pet cemeteries will also deal with you directly. That's the easiest way to ask about a viewing, an attended cremation or a graveside service. The table shows published Canadian prices so you know what's typical in Edmonton.

What you can and can't do in Alberta
A farewell itself needs no permission anywhere: you can gather, speak and say goodbye at home as you wish. The rules start when the body or the ashes go into the ground or the open air. Here's what applies in Alberta for burying at home and scattering ashes.
Across Canada, most farewells happen at home or through the family vet, and some crematories near larger cities have a family room for a short visit before cremation. Winter matters: in much of the country the ground is frozen for months, so many families hold the goodbye indoors and bury the ashes with a small ceremony in spring.
The rules that apply across Alberta (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Alberta page. Edmonton may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
Your checklist for the first day
- If the goodbye is planned, ask your vet about a home visit and book it early; in-home vets serving Edmonton can be booked up days ahead.
- Tell the vet what you'd like around it: time before, time after, and collection only once the family is ready.
- Prepare the room: dim lights, phones out of sight, a blanket, the bed they know.
- Give each person, including children, one small job, whether that's picking a flower or reading a single sentence aloud.
- Say a few words. One memory per person is enough, and laughing is fine.
- Plan a second gathering around the ashes' return, so anyone who missed the first can still take part.
The weeks and months after the goodbye
Edmonton's long winter can make grief heavier, with short days and cold that keeps people indoors for weeks at a time. If your pet dies in December or January, try to keep some structure: daylight time outside when the weather allows, a regular call with a friend, something small in the evenings. A farewell at home, even a short one, gives the household a clear moment together.

Questions people ask
Why does the Edmonton page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030) reports about 81.1%[1] of Canada residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Do pet funeral homes exist near Edmonton?
Some pet crematories have a farewell or viewing room, some pet cemeteries host graveside services, and a few human funeral homes offer pet services. In a city the size of Edmonton you may find several of these. Tell us what you'd like and where your pet is now, and we'll email options that serve your area.
How much does a pet funeral cost in Edmonton?
It depends mostly on whether you choose individual cremation, communal cremation or a cemetery grave, and on your pet's weight. Published examples are in the table on this page. A home ceremony before collection adds little. A viewing room, attended cremation or columbarium niche is priced by each provider, so ask for those items to be listed separately.
Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?
Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[6] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Be patient with yourself, keep eating and sleeping as best you can, and talk to someone who understands. Our grief check-in can help you notice when it may be time to ask for more support.
What do you say at a pet's funeral?
Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.
Should my other pets see the body before the farewell?
Many owners let them, and it rarely does harm. Give your other dog or cat a few calm minutes to sniff and walk away in their own time. Some show little interest; others seem to search the house less afterwards. There's no evidence it's required, so if it feels wrong for your household, skip it. Keep routines steady for the animals left behind in the days that follow.
