What a pet funeral costs in Alberta
Budget for yourself as well as your pet. A private pet-loss counselling hour costs CA$220 at one Calgary practice [2], about as much as a basic private cremation by our estimate [3], while several free pet-loss helplines exist. In Ontario, one aftercare provider lists private cremation at CAD 449 for pets under 25 lb [4]. Ask providers near Alberta for their own written figures.
Some Canadian SPCAs and humane societies bundle euthanasia with communal cremation. In Hamilton and Burlington, the bundle runs CAD 225-475[5] plus HST, depending on the animal. What Alberta allows for burial and scattering
Your city, county or local council can set tighter rules than Alberta as a whole, especially for small suburban lots and land near drinking water supplies. A short call to the local environmental health or planning office settles it. The regional picture follows.
Across Canada, most farewells happen at home or through the family vet, and some crematories near larger cities have a family room for a short visit before cremation. Winter matters: in much of the country the ground is frozen for months, so many families hold the goodbye indoors and bury the ashes with a small ceremony in spring.

- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
From first call to farewell: the steps
- Choose a day while your pet still has good moments, then arrange the vet's visit to the house and agree what happens afterwards, all in one call.
- Fill the days before with small favorites: a slow walk, a patch of sun, the treat that's usually off limits.
- Decide who will hold your pet and who would rather wait in another room. Both are loving choices, and nobody should be talked into either.
- Set out the blanket you're happy to send with them, with any drawing, note or toy that should go into the cremation or grave too.
- When the vet has finished, take as long as you need. The collection can wait an hour; ask them to step outside if you want privacy.
- Walk out to the car or van with your pet if you'd like to. Many teams use a stretcher or basket and will let you help carry.
Remembering your pet in Alberta
Many families in Alberta hold a second, lighter gathering once the ashes are home: photos on a table, the lead and bowl, a favorite playlist and people telling stories. Can I be present at my pet's cremation in Alberta?
Many crematories offer witnessed or attended cremation, especially around the larger cities. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. In rural parts of Alberta, the nearest crematory that offers it may be some distance away, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly.
