A goodbye that fits life in Pullman
For students far from family, an animal's death can land in the middle of exams or a packed semester. Campus counseling services are there for this too, alongside pet-loss hotlines and online groups. Let a professor or advisor know if you need a little time. Grief can scramble concentration and sleep, and friends who knew the animal often want to help, so let them.
Farewells in Pullman are often small: roommates or family gathered in an apartment or backyard with photos and stories. If you share the animal with roommates, give everyone a chance to say goodbye. Friends back home can join by video call. Children in faculty households might pick out a blanket or plaything to accompany the body, and a viewing can be requested from the provider if one is offered.
Neighbours in a place like Pullman often offer to help, and it's fine to say yes. Someone with a small digger or a strong back can prepare a grave, a friend can mind the children for an hour, and someone else can bring supper so nobody has to cook that night. Accepting help is part of how small communities mark a loss.
Pullman's population is around 33,756, the 39th-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Spokane, about 65 miles (105 km) away, which is where some providers serving Pullman are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Moscow (8 miles), Lewiston (25 miles) and Spokane Valley (64 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
12,500
Pullman: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
33,756 ÷ 2.5 = 13,502 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 12,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,050
dog and cat deaths per year in Pullman, our estimate
How we calculated this
12,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,050 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

What local funeral habits mean for your pet
Cremation is the usual choice for people in Washington, at about 79.1%[5]. For pets, that often means the funeral is a gathering around the ashes rather than a burial: a celebration of life at home, a scattering on a favorite walk or a small planting in the garden. None of those needs a venue, and all of them can happen weeks later, when everyone is ready.
For the Washington figure we rely on Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Pullman rather than as pet data.
Pullman weather and your pet's farewell
It's tempting to keep your pet in an unheated garage or shed through January, February, March, April, November and December until the ground softens. For a few days that can work, in a closed box off the floor and sealed from wildlife, but over weeks the temperature swings too much. For a spring burial, cremation now and burying the ashes later is kinder and simpler.
Cold weather gives you a little more time before a home farewell has to end, but it also makes outdoor goodbyes harder. With December lows near 22°F in Pullman, keep any outdoor part short, with hats, gloves and a warm room to go back to. The words can be said indoors by the window facing the garden.

The real cost of a pet goodbye in Pullman
Being present costs extra. One US pricing guide says viewing or witnessing a cremation typically adds $25 to $100 [6], and the posted surcharges we found run from $25 to $350, with a median of about $125 by our estimate [7]. Ask Pullman crematories whether a short viewing is already included before paying for a separate appointment.

Burial, scattering and gathering rules in Washington
Before you plan a graveside ceremony in the garden or a scattering on a favorite walk, check the local rules. They're mostly about protecting water and other people's land, so they focus on depth, distance from wells and streams, and permission from whoever owns the land. Here's the picture for Washington.
Washington keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Pullman.
The Washington page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Pullman's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Planning a farewell in Pullman, step by step
- Ask the clinic for a quiet room and some time, even if the decision was made in a rush. You don't have to leave straight away.
- Don't sign the aftercare form on the spot if you're unsure. The practice can hold your pet in cold storage for a day; ask for that and take the time to decide.
- Find out which crematory the practice uses, and whether you can choose a different one or take your pet home for burial instead.
- Request a paw print or a clipping of fur before your pet leaves the room; it's much harder to arrange later.
- If family couldn't get there in time, ask if the clinic will let them come in for their own goodbye before the pickup.
- Get the aftercare price on its own line, kept apart from the treatment charges, so the cost of the farewell itself is plain to see.
- Pencil in a gathering for later, either once the ashes have come home or beside the grave, so those who couldn't be there get their moment.
Anniversaries, gatherings and quiet reminders
Some Pullman residents hold a remembrance at the end of the semester, or wait until they're home with family. The remains will keep, so there's no rush. A walk up Kamiak Butte, a scrapbook, or a gift to a Palouse animal shelter can mark the loss. Grief keeps its own calendar, and even a year later is fine. Summer break can be a good time.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Washington?
For people, yes: about 79.1%[5] of Washington deaths end in cremation, according to Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Pullman follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Spokane to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Spokane (roughly 65 miles from Pullman) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is Pullman big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 12,500 Pullman households keep a dog or cat and around 1,050 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 33,756), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Pullman?
January, February, March, April, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 86°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How much does a pet funeral cost in Pullman?
The farewell itself can cost almost nothing if you hold it at home. The main costs are body care: in the US, private dog cremation averages about $260[9] and pet cemetery burial about $831[10]. A home visit from the vet for the goodbye averages about $410[11]. Viewings, witnessed cremation, flowers and a headstone add to that, so ask Pullman providers for a written, itemized total.
What's a viewing, and do I need one?
A viewing is unhurried time with your pet in a private room, usually at the crematory, vet or a funeral home, before cremation or burial. You don't need one, but it helps if you weren't there at the end, if relatives are arriving from out of town, or if children need to see that their pet has really died.
