Virginia Beach, Virginia
Choosing where the farewell happens in Virginia Beach
Children in Virginia Beach families often like to make something to remember a pet, such as painting a shell or stone from the beach, or planting something in the garden. Keep explanations simple and honest, and let them ask questions. For adults, grief can return in the first summer without their pet or on the anniversary, and that is an ordinary part of loss rather than a setback.
For many people in Virginia Beach, sunrise over the Atlantic was a shared routine with their pet, and the oceanfront, the boardwalk or the trails at First Landing can feel painfully quiet afterwards. Some go back to watch the sunrise as a way to remember. If grief is weighing on you, a friend who knew your pet, your vet or a pet loss support line can help you through it.
Children are often part of a Virginia Beach pet farewell, and the practical side is easier than parents fear. Give each child a small job, such as choosing a flower, drawing a picture to go with the pet, or holding the candle. Keep the ceremony short, use plain words like 'died', and let children step out whenever they want.
Virginia Beach's population is around 453,737, the largest of the 32 Virginia communities we cover.
Virginia Beach sits within easy reach of Norfolk (16 miles), Portsmouth (21 miles) and Chesapeake (22 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Virginia Beach; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
165,000
Virginia Beach: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
453,737 ÷ 2.5 = 181,495 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 165,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
14,000
dog and cat deaths per year in Virginia Beach, our estimate
How we calculated this
165,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 14,000 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

What local funeral habits mean for your pet
About 55.6%[5] of people in Virginia are cremated, so both traditions sit side by side here. Some families will instinctively want to bury their pet, others to bring the ashes home. A farewell works with either: a graveside moment in the garden or a pet cemetery, or a short ceremony before the pet is collected for cremation.
That Virginia rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Virginia Beach only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
When the weather shapes the goodbye
If family need a day or two to arrive in hot weather, don't try to keep your pet at home. Ask the vet or crematory to hold your pet in their cold room, then book a viewing there when everyone is in town. It gives you unhurried time together without worrying about the heat of July.
Virginia Beach summers are hot, with July highs around 89°F. Heat changes how long a home farewell can wait. If your pet dies at home in the warm months, move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor, run the air conditioning and hold the goodbye within a few hours. Ask for collection straight afterwards.

The real cost of a pet goodbye in Virginia Beach
If cost is on your mind, you're in good company: in a survey of more than 2,000 US owners, 61% said the cost of body care worried them [6]. Cemetery burial is less alarming for smaller pets. Across five posted US price lists, the median whole-body burial for a small pet, plot and opening included, is ~$350[7] by our estimate. Ask cemeteries near Virginia Beach for a cremains plot price too.
We keep the detailed Virginia price table on one page so it stays current: see Virginia prices.

Before you dig or scatter in Virginia
Beaches, rivers and lakes often have their own scattering rules, set by a different authority from parks, and some ask you to scatter a set distance from shore. Here's the general picture for Virginia; for the exact spot, check with whoever manages that land or water.
To find your county or city office in Virginia, start with the official Virginia local government directory.
The rules that apply across Virginia (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Virginia page. Virginia Beach may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A pet funeral within a day: how to do it
- Ask the clinic for a quiet room and some time, even if the decision was made in a rush. You don't have to leave straight away.
- Don't sign the aftercare form on the spot if you're unsure. Ask the clinic to keep your pet in their cold room for a day while you think.
- Find out which crematory the practice uses, then ask if you're free to pick another provider, or to bring your pet home and bury them yourself.
- Request a paw print or a clipping of fur before your pet leaves the room; it's much harder to arrange later.
- If family couldn't get there in time, ask if the clinic will let them come in for their own goodbye before the pickup.
- Get the aftercare price on its own line, kept apart from the treatment charges, so the cost of the farewell itself is plain to see.
- Pencil in a gathering for later, either once the ashes have come home or beside the grave, so those who couldn't be there get their moment.
The weeks and months after the goodbye
Navy families in Virginia Beach know that a pet can die while a partner is at sea or away on deployment, leaving one parent to handle everything with the children. If that happens, it is fine to ask friends, neighbours or your command's family support services for practical help. Some families record a short video or save a lock of fur so the absent parent can share in the goodbye.

Questions people ask
Does the Virginia Beach climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 89°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Virginia Beach?
The closest communities we cover are Norfolk (about 16 miles), Portsmouth (about 21 miles) and Chesapeake (about 22 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Virginia Beach too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How many pet owners live in Virginia Beach?
By our estimate, about 165,000 households in Virginia Beach have at least one dog or cat, and around 14,000 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 453,737, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
How do Virginia attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Virginia human cremation rate at about 55.6%[5]. We show it on the Virginia Beach page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How much does a pet funeral cost in Virginia Beach?
The farewell itself can cost almost nothing if you hold it at home. The main costs are body care: in the US, private dog cremation averages about $260[9] and pet cemetery burial about $831[10]. A home visit from the vet for the goodbye averages about $410[11]. Viewings, witnessed cremation, flowers and a headstone add to that, so ask Virginia Beach providers for a written, itemized total.
Do people hold funerals for hamsters, birds and other small pets?
Plenty do. A small pet's farewell needs little more than a lined box, a few words and a flower, and children often need it more than adults expect. Choose a garden grave where local rules allow and you expect to stay, or ask a crematory about individual cremation for small animals, since the amount of ash is tiny. Mark the spot with a stone or a pot plant.
