McGregor, Texas
A goodbye that fits life in McGregor
Some McGregor families hold a remembrance when paintbrush and bluebonnets bloom along the farm roads, or once the late-summer heat finally lifts. Others choose the adoption date. The family can wait for a gathering that brings everyone together, even relatives from Waco or farther away, and a simple meal on the porch can be all it needs to feel complete.
McGregor is small enough that neighbors, church friends and coworkers may all have known your pet. A few words before supper, or a short gathering out back, lets everyone share a memory. Children may want to pick wildflowers or tuck a photo into a frame for their room, so they have something of their own to hold onto in the months ahead.
In a smaller place like McGregor, a pet farewell usually happens at home or on the family's own land, because that's where the pet lived and where there's space. The vet often comes out for the goodbye, and cremation happens at a crematory in a larger centre such as McGregor. That means the farewell and the handover are yours to shape, without a venue to book.
McGregor is home to about 6,405 people, the 229th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Woodway (11 miles), Hewitt (13 miles, a larger centre) and Waco (17 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
2,350
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in McGregor
How we calculated this
6,405 ÷ 2.5 = 2,562 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 2,350. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
200
Estimated dog and cat losses in McGregor each year
How we calculated this
2,350 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 200 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

39%[3]

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

What local burial and cremation customs suggest
About 55.7%[5] of people in Texas are cremated, so both traditions sit side by side here. Some families will instinctively want to bury their pet, others to bring the ashes home. A farewell works with either: a graveside moment in the garden or a pet cemetery, or a short ceremony before the pet is collected for cremation.
We take the Texas rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for McGregor, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Planning around heat, cold and rain in McGregor
Wherever you are, the same rule holds: keep your pet cool, indoors and out of direct sun while you plan the farewell. In warm weather, hold the home goodbye within a few hours or ask the vet to hold your pet in a cold room. In cold weather you have more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial.

What a pet funeral costs in McGregor
If cost is on your mind, you're in good company: in a survey of more than 2,000 US owners, 61% said the cost of body care worried them [6]. Cemetery burial is less alarming for smaller pets. Across five posted US price lists, the median whole-body burial for a small pet, plot and opening included, is ~$350[7] by our estimate. Ask cemeteries near McGregor for a cremains plot price too.

Burial, scattering and gathering rules in Texas
A farewell itself needs no permission anywhere: you can gather, speak and say goodbye at home as you wish. The rules start when the body or the ashes go into the ground or the open air. Here's what applies in Texas for burying at home and scattering ashes.

For Texas's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Texas guide. Local rules in McGregor can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Find a small box and soft bedding, such as a shoebox lined with a cloth or some of their own nesting material.
- Choose between cremation and a garden grave. Tiny pets leave very little ash, so ask the crematory how they keep it separate and what it comes back in.
- For a garden grave, pick a spot on land you expect to keep, check the local rules, and plan a marker such as a flat stone or a pot plant.
- Invite whoever looked after them, and that can be just a parent and a child. Small creatures leave surprisingly large holes.
- Say a few words or read a note, then lay a flower or a pinch of their favorite food on the lid.
- Clear the cage, hutch or tank slowly over a few days, rather than the same afternoon, so the room doesn't feel suddenly empty.
The weeks and months after the goodbye
Losing an animal can land hard in rural homes where it was part of every daily chore. Wanting to talk about your pet long after the loss is very common, and there is no shame in it. Waco has counselors and groups, and a call to a pet loss line can be a good first step for anyone who prefers to talk from home.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in McGregor each year?
Our estimate is around 200. It comes from McGregor's population (about 6,405), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 2,350 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Which nearby towns can I compare with McGregor?
The closest communities we cover are Woodway (about 11 miles), Hewitt (about 13 miles) and Waco (about 17 miles). Providers based in those places often serve McGregor too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[5]. We show it on the McGregor page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How much is a pet cemetery plot near McGregor?
It varies more than almost any other pet funeral cost. Across 15 US pet cemeteries, starting burial prices had a median of ~$600[8], while a typical full burial runs $1,500–$2,000[9] once opening, closing and a marker are added. Burying ashes in a cemetery plot usually costs less than a whole-body burial. Ask cemeteries near McGregor for the plot, opening fee and care fees separately.
How many families in McGregor lose a pet each year?
By our estimate, about 2,350 households in McGregor have a dog or cat, and around 200 of those pets die each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures. It's a floor rather than a ceiling, because households with several pets count once.
What do you say at a pet's funeral?
Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.
