How families in Fate say goodbye to a pet
Many families in Fate moved here recently, so close friends and extended family may live hours away. If you are grieving without that circle nearby, ask your vet for pet loss resources or call a national hotline; either can connect you with someone who understands. Online groups for pet loss are another way to find people who will simply listen.
Grief does not follow a schedule. Expect the loss to linger for weeks or months, and expect to be ambushed by small reminders, such as an empty bed, a food bowl or a habit of looking for your pet at the door. Give yourself that time, be patient with each other at home, and do not feel pressure to adopt again before you are ready.
In Fate, the church hall, the community centre or a friendly café may be the natural place to gather after a pet's farewell, especially if half the town knew your dog from walks down the main street. A tea urn, a table of photos and an hour on a weekday afternoon is often all it takes.
About 29,007 people live in Fate, which makes it the 114th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Fate are based about 15 miles away in Garland, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Royse City (3 miles), Rockwall (5 miles) and Heath (9 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Fate too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
10,500
Fate: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
29,007 ÷ 2.5 = 11,603 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 10,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
890
dog and cat deaths per year in Fate, our estimate
How we calculated this
10,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 890 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How Texas thinks about funerals and cremation
In a place where roughly 55.7%[5] of people are cremated, families follow a mix of faiths, some of which prefer burial for people. Many traditions say little about animals' remains, so a pet's farewell is usually a family choice. If it matters to you, a quick word with your faith leader before the vet visit saves second thoughts later.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Texas figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Fate tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
When the weather shapes the goodbye
Seasonal flowers are the easiest way to mark a pet's farewell in Fate: whatever is blooming in the garden or at the market that week. Lay a handful beside your pet or on the grave, and consider planting the same thing later so it comes into bloom again around the anniversary.

Pet funeral and burial prices for families in Fate
If cost is on your mind, you're in good company: in a survey of more than 2,000 US owners, 61% said the cost of body care worried them [6]. Cemetery burial is less alarming for smaller pets. Across five posted US price lists, the median whole-body burial for a small pet, plot and opening included, is ~$350[7] by our estimate. Ask cemeteries near Fate for a cremains plot price too.

Burial, scattering and gathering rules in Texas
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug stays in the body, and wildlife or other animals can be poisoned if a grave is dug up. That risk is one reason home burial is regulated at all, and why a well-covered grave or cremation matters. Here's what Texas says.

Start with the Texas rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Fate's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Ask the clinic for a quiet room and some time, whether or not everything happened quickly. There's no rule that says you must walk out right after.
- Don't sign the aftercare form on the spot if you're unsure. The practice can hold your pet in cold storage for a day; ask for that and take the time to decide.
- Find out which crematory the practice uses, and whether you can choose a different one or take your pet home for burial instead.
- Request a paw print or a clipping of fur while your pet is still in the room; once they've gone it's far harder to organize.
- If family couldn't get there in time, ask whether they can visit the clinic to say goodbye before the collection.
- Get the aftercare price on its own line, kept apart from the treatment charges, so the cost of the farewell itself is plain to see.
- Pencil in a gathering for later, either once the ashes have come home or beside the grave, so those who couldn't be there get their moment.
Keeping their memory alive in Fate
A farewell can be simple: family gathered on the patio, a candle, and a few favorite stories, with children drawing pictures or writing notes to the pet. Some households add a song or a short prayer. If saying goodbye in person matters to you, whether at a viewing or at the crematory itself, bring it up right away so the provider can explain what they are able to offer.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Fate each year?
Our estimate is around 890. It comes from Fate's population (about 29,007), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 10,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Where are the providers that serve Fate actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Garland, about 15 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Fate and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[5] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Fate follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Fate?
Usually yes. Royse City is about 3 miles away, Rockwall is about 5 miles away and Heath is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I hold a funeral for my pet at home in Fate?
Yes, and it's the most common kind of pet funeral. Choose a quiet room or a corner of the garden, lay your pet on their bed, invite the few people who should be there and plan one small ritual. Then ask the vet or crematory to collect afterwards, or go ahead with a home burial if Texas rules allow it.
Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park in Fate?
Sometimes, with permission. Parks, beaches and nature reserves have their own rules, and many ask you to contact the park authority first. Private land needs the owner's permission. Choose a quiet time and spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter low and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
