How families in Summit say goodbye to a pet
Some households invite a few friends into the garden after the thaw, once the ashes are home. Others choose a candle in the window, a photograph by the front door or a gift to an animal charity. No single form is correct. What matters is that the people who loved the animal get a moment to share stories, and that anyone still grieving months later feels free to ask for help.
In a commuter town, the loss of a pet can land hardest on whoever was home during the day, often a child, a retiree or someone working remotely. A short farewell before the collection, even ten minutes with a favorite blanket, lets everyone take their leave properly. If you'd prefer a viewing or a quiet room at the provider's premises, ask when you request options, as not all offer one.
In Summit, the church hall, the community centre or a friendly café may be the natural place to gather after a pet's farewell, especially if half the town knew your dog from walks down the main street. A tea urn, a table of photos and an hour on a weekday afternoon is often all it takes.
About 23,314 people live in Summit, which makes it the 42nd-largest of the 58 New Jersey communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Summit are based about 10 miles away in Newark, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Summit sits within easy reach of Short Hills (3 miles), Westfield (4 miles) and Roselle (7 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Summit; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

What local burial and cremation customs suggest
Even with cremation at around 56.5%[5] in New Jersey, grandparents may have grown up burying the family dog under a tree, while their grandchildren expect an urn on the shelf. Asking an older relative to lead one part of the farewell, perhaps choosing the spot or saying the first words, brings their experience into a goodbye the younger generation has planned.
For the New Jersey figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Summit rather than as pet data.
Seasons, timing and ceremonies in Summit
It's tempting to keep your pet in an unheated garage or shed through January, February and December until the ground softens. For a few days that can work, in a closed box off the floor and sealed from wildlife, but over weeks the temperature swings too much. For a spring burial, cremation now and burying the ashes later is kinder and simpler.
Home vet visits still happen through Summit winters, but icy steps and early darkness slow everyone down. Clear and grit the path, leave the porch light on and book a daytime slot in January if you can. Warm the room well beforehand too; an old pet who is shivering is harder to settle.

What a pet funeral costs in Summit
Pet cemetery burial costs about three times a private cremation in the US, by our estimate (3.2x[6]), because a plot, opening the grave and long-term care are all involved. That's why many families in Summit choose cremation followed by a small burial of the ashes, which keeps the graveside ceremony at a fraction of the price.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for New Jersey: New Jersey costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Permissions to check in New Jersey before the ceremony
A farewell itself needs no permission anywhere: you can gather, speak and say goodbye at home as you wish. The rules start when the body or the ashes go into the ground or the open air. Here's what applies in New Jersey for burying at home and scattering ashes.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the New Jersey level first; our New Jersey rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Summit or your HOA adds anything.
A simple plan for the hours ahead
- Take a breath. If your pet has died at home, lay them on their bed or a towel in a cool room. Nothing has to happen in the next hour.
- Decide cremation or burial first. That one choice sets the clock for everything else, including when the farewell can happen.
- Call the vet, crematory or pet cemetery to reserve a slot, and find out if they can hold your pet in cold storage in the meantime.
- Send one short message giving the place and time to the handful of people you want present.
- Choose a spot and one small ritual: a candle, a letter tucked under a paw, a favorite toy, a song.
- Hold the farewell, then hand your pet to the collection team or lay them to rest.
- Ask for the written total before collection, including any viewing or ceremony fee.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Newark to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Newark (roughly 10 miles from Summit) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Summit?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 87°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Why does the Summit page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 56.5%[5] of New Jersey residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Summit?
Usually yes. Short Hills is about 3 miles away, Westfield is about 4 miles away and Roselle is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What do you say at a pet's funeral?
Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.
How much does a pet funeral cost in Summit?
The farewell itself can cost almost nothing if you hold it at home. The main costs are body care: in the US, private dog cremation averages about $260[8] and pet cemetery burial about $831[9]. A home visit from the vet for the goodbye averages about $410[10]. Viewings, witnessed cremation, flowers and a headstone add to that, so ask Summit providers for a written, itemized total.
