Pet farewells in Boulder City: the local picture
Retirees make up much of Boulder City, and many live far from children and grandchildren, which can make losing a companion animal feel especially lonely. Pet-loss hotlines run nationally can be reached by phone or web chat, and quite a few Las Vegas area counselors see clients by video. If sadness lingers beyond a few weeks or starts disturbing sleep, contacting someone is a reasonable move.
Some Boulder City families wait until autumn cools the desert and the ashes are home. A gathering on a mild October evening, with printed photos, a collar laid on the table and relatives driving in from Henderson or Las Vegas, can feel more natural than anything rushed together that first week. Choosing to wait is not avoidance; for many people it is simply the right pace.
Working dogs, barn cats and old ponies are part of family life around Boulder City, and their farewells often happen where they worked: by the barn, at the edge of the field or on the porch step. A few words from whoever worked alongside them and a quiet minute with the other animals nearby honours the job they did.
Boulder City is home to about 14,884 people, the 10th-largest of the 11 Nevada communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Henderson, about 14 miles (23 km) away, which is where some providers serving Boulder City are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Henderson (14 miles, a larger centre), Las Vegas (26 miles, a larger centre) and Summerlin (32 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
5,500
Boulder City: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
14,884 ÷ 2.5 = 5,954 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 5,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
460
Estimated dog and cat losses in Boulder City each year
How we calculated this
5,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 460 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

What local burial and cremation customs suggest
Cremation is the usual choice for people in Nevada, at about 80.7%[5]. For pets, that often means the funeral is a gathering around the ashes rather than a burial: a celebration of life at home, a scattering on a favorite walk or a small planting in the garden. None of those needs a venue, and all of them can happen weeks later, when everyone is ready.
We take the Nevada rate from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Boulder City, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
When the weather shapes the goodbye
Warm weather brings flies, which can upset children at an outdoor goodbye. Wrap your pet in a light cotton sheet with only the face showing, keep the outdoor part in deep shade and keep it short. During Boulder City's May, June, July, August and September, many families simply move the ceremony indoors, with the curtains drawn and a fan running.
Boulder City summers are hot, with July highs around 105°F. Heat changes how long a home farewell can wait. If your pet dies at home in the warm months, move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor, run the air conditioning and hold the goodbye within a few hours. Ask for collection straight afterwards.

Budgeting for a farewell in Boulder City
Pet cemetery burial costs about three times a private cremation in the US, by our estimate (3.2x[6]), because a plot, opening the grave and long-term care are all involved. That's why many families in Boulder City choose cremation followed by a small burial of the ashes, which keeps the graveside ceremony at a fraction of the price.
The full price table by product is on our Nevada page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Permissions to check in Nevada before the ceremony
Beaches, rivers and lakes often have their own scattering rules, set by a different authority from parks, and some ask you to scatter a set distance from shore. Here's the general picture for Nevada; for the exact spot, check with whoever manages that land or water.

A simple plan for the hours ahead
- Ask the clinic for a quiet room and some time, whether or not everything happened quickly. There's no rule that says you must walk out right after.
- Don't sign the aftercare form on the spot if you're unsure. The practice can hold your pet in cold storage for a day; ask for that and take the time to decide.
- Find out which crematory the practice uses, then ask if you're free to pick another provider, or to bring your pet home and bury them yourself.
- Request a paw print or a clipping of fur before your pet leaves the room; it's much harder to arrange later.
- If family couldn't get there in time, ask if the clinic will let them come in for their own goodbye before the pickup.
- Get the aftercare price on its own line, kept apart from the treatment charges, so the cost of the farewell itself is plain to see.
- Pencil in a gathering for later, either once the ashes have come home or beside the grave, so those who couldn't be there get their moment.
Anniversaries, gatherings and quiet reminders
In a town of roughly 15,000 people, neighbors soon notice an empty porch where a familiar animal used to sit. Farewells here can stay small: family gathered on the patio after the sun drops behind the ridge, a candle, a few sentences each. Some owners arrange a vet's visit at home so a frail animal skips the drive down the hill. Youngsters tend to cope once someone speaks to them plainly and hands them a chore of their own that day.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Boulder City?
Usually yes. Henderson is about 14 miles away, Las Vegas is about 26 miles away and Summerlin is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Boulder City page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) reports about 80.7%[5] of Nevada residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Roughly how many pets die in Boulder City each year?
Our estimate is around 460. It comes from Boulder City's population (about 14,884), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 5,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Boulder City?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 105°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can I have a religious blessing at my pet's farewell?
Yes. Many clergy will say a short blessing for an animal if asked, at home or by a grave, and some pet cemeteries can suggest a celebrant. Start with your own faith community. In Japan, some pet memorial parks include chanting by a monk at a witnessed cremation, which shows how naturally faith and pet funerals can sit together.
What's a viewing, and do I need one?
A viewing is unhurried time with your pet in a private room, usually at the crematory, vet or a funeral home, before cremation or burial. You don't need one, but it helps if you weren't there at the end, if relatives are arriving from out of town, or if children need to see that their pet has really died.
