Pet farewells in Southaven: the local picture
Some families wait for a cooler evening in October or April to hold a memorial, once the ashes are home and relatives from Memphis and Hernando can drive over. A few stories on the patio, photos passed around, and a gardenia planted beside the patio can be enough. A later farewell is every bit as real as one held the same week, and sometimes gentler.
Grief for an animal can sit heavily, even when those around you move on quickly. Counselors across the Memphis metro work with people after pet loss, and free national helplines answer calls and chats into the night. A quick word with the school office or your own manager tends to earn some slack while everyone in the house gets used to the empty spot by the door.
People in a town the size of Southaven tend to know each other, and that shapes a pet's farewell. Neighbors may want to come, the vet may know your pet well, and the local minister or priest may be happy to say a few words if asked. Decide early how public or private you want it to be, and say so kindly.
With roughly 57,819 residents, Southaven is the 3rd-largest of the 21 Mississippi communities we cover. Memphis, roughly 14 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Southaven run from there.
Our pages for Horn Lake (4 miles), Hernando (7 miles) and Olive Branch (8 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Southaven as well.
Our estimate
21,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Southaven
How we calculated this
57,819 ÷ 2.5 = 23,128 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 21,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,750
Southaven families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
21,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,750 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]

What local burial and cremation customs suggest
Graves matter in Mississippi, with cremation at just <40%[5] or so, and a pet's grave usually gets a marker too. A flat stone set level with the lawn is easy to mow around; an upright one is easier to find in long grass. If you might sell the house, a movable stone or planter can come with you. Our memorial stone planner helps with wording.
We take the Mississippi rate from Cremation.Green summary of CANA 2026 Annual Statistics Report (2025). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Southaven, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
When the weather shapes the goodbye
If family need a day or two to arrive in hot weather, don't try to keep your pet at home. Ask the vet or crematory to hold your pet in their cold room, then book a viewing there when everyone is in town. It gives you unhurried time together without worrying about the heat of July.
Warm weather brings flies, which can upset children at an outdoor goodbye. Wrap your pet in a light cotton sheet with only the face showing, keep the outdoor part in deep shade and keep it short. During Southaven's June, July, August and September, many families simply move the ceremony indoors, with the curtains drawn and a fan running.

Where the money goes in a Southaven pet funeral
The ceremony itself is rarely the expensive part of a pet funeral in Southaven. The cost sits in the body care underneath it: private dog cremation averages about $260[6] in the US, and pet cemetery burial about $831[7]. A viewing may be included or charged by the half hour, and a home farewell can cost almost nothing.

Permissions to check in Mississippi before the ceremony
Most of what happens at a pet funeral is up to you. The exceptions are home burial, which Mississippi and your city or county may regulate, and scattering ashes in parks or on land you don't own, which usually needs the owner's permission. The key points are below.
Mississippi keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Southaven.
The rules that apply across Mississippi (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Mississippi page. Southaven may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Keep your pet cool inside the house while you phone around; this matters most in warm weather.
- Ask whether a viewing room or witnessed cremation is possible, plus how much notice they need for either.
- For a pet cemetery burial, ask what the plot and grave opening cost, whether a casket or shroud is needed, and if a service at the grave is allowed that day.
- For a home burial, read up on what Mississippi allows, pick ground clear of drains and water, and have the grave ready before people get there.
- Collect a keepsake first: a paw print, a clipping of fur, the collar and tags.
- Confirm the price in writing before the pickup is allowed to happen.
- Write down the date you're told the ashes will return, so you can plan what comes next.
Keeping their memory alive in Southaven
Goodbyes in Southaven often mix family and faith: a prayer in the backyard, a neighbor bringing supper, children gathered around the pet's bed. If your animal is frail and anxious in the car, find out whether a mobile vet serves your subdivision. Kids handle the day better when adults are straight with them and hand them a task, such as choosing the blanket.

Questions people ask
How do Mississippi attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation.Green summary of CANA 2026 Annual Statistics Report (2025) puts the Mississippi human cremation rate at about <40%[5]. We show it on the Southaven page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Memphis to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Memphis (roughly 14 miles from Southaven) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is Southaven big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 21,500 Southaven households keep a dog or cat and around 1,750 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 57,819), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Southaven?
Usually yes. Horn Lake is about 4 miles away, Hernando is about 7 miles away and Olive Branch is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What do you say at a pet's funeral?
Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.
What can I send with my pet for cremation or burial?
Most crematories let a blanket, a letter, a drawing or a small soft toy go with your pet. Many ask you to remove metal tags, plastic toys and rubber collars, which don't burn cleanly, so keep those as keepsakes instead. For a garden grave, choose natural materials such as cotton, wool or untreated wood. If something must come back to you, say so before the handover, not after.
