Holland, Michigan
A goodbye that fits life in Holland
Pet loss support is within reach in Holland and in Grand Rapids half an hour away, from grief counselors to evening groups meeting in person or on video. Ask your vet whom they trust, and ask about home euthanasia, which some practices near the lakeshore provide. For a conversation right now, veterinary school helplines are free and welcome callers from any state.
Faith is central to life for many Holland families, and some find comfort in a pastor's blessing or a prayer at the kitchen table when a pet dies. Others prefer a quiet gathering at the beach or in the backyard at dusk. Children can take part by planting a few tulip bulbs in the fall or choosing the photos for a frame.
If you live outside Holland itself, on a farm or a long rural road, ask any provider whether they'll collect from your address and what the mileage adds. Some families bring their pet to the vet or the crematory to keep the cost down, and hold the farewell at home first, with the car ready and a favorite blanket for the journey.
Holland's population is around 35,372, the 32nd-largest of the 63 Michigan communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Holland are based about 25 miles away in Grand Rapids, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Saugatuck (9 miles), Wyoming (22 miles, a larger centre) and Walker (23 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Holland as well.
Our estimate
13,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Holland
How we calculated this
35,372 ÷ 2.5 = 14,149 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 13,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,100
Estimated dog and cat losses in Holland each year
How we calculated this
13,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,100 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in Michigan
About 69.5%[5] of people in Michigan are cremated, so local faith communities are used to both burial and cremation. If you'd like a blessing for your pet, many clergy will say one at home or by a grave, and there's no set form. A short prayer, a reading or a moment of silence before the collection or the burial is plenty.
We take the Michigan rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Holland, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
How the seasons in Holland affect the day
Seasonal flowers are the easiest way to mark a pet's farewell in Holland: whatever is blooming in the garden or at the market that week. Lay a handful beside your pet or on the grave, and consider planting the same thing later so it comes into bloom again around the anniversary.

Pet farewell prices for Holland families
Ask every provider in Holland to split the quote in two: body care (collection, cremation or burial, the container) and the farewell (viewing time, witnessed cremation, a graveside service). Seeing the two numbers apart makes it easy to drop what you don't need. The national figures below show what's typical.
The full price table by product is on our Michigan page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Before you dig or scatter in Michigan
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug stays in the body, and wildlife or other animals can be poisoned if a grave is dug up. That risk is one reason home burial is regulated at all, and why a well-covered grave or cremation matters. Here's what Michigan says.
Not sure which office covers Holland? The Michigan local government directory is the official list.
Start with the Michigan rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Holland's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Planning a farewell in Holland, step by step
- Ask the clinic for a quiet room and some time, whether or not everything happened quickly. There's no rule that says you must walk out right after.
- Don't sign the aftercare form on the spot if you're unsure. The practice can hold your pet in cold storage for a day; ask for that and take the time to decide.
- Find out which crematory the practice uses, and whether you can choose a different one or take your pet home for burial instead.
- Request a paw print or a clipping of fur while your pet is still in the room; once they've gone it's far harder to organize.
- If family couldn't get there in time, ask if the clinic will let them come in for their own goodbye before the pickup.
- Get the aftercare price on its own line, kept apart from the treatment charges, so the cost of the farewell itself is plain to see.
- Pencil in a gathering for later, for when the ashes are back or at the graveside, for the people who missed the day.
The weeks and months after the goodbye
The first weeks after losing a companion can be the hardest, especially when a well-kept household routine suddenly has a gap in it. Grief doesn't always follow the calendar; it may return with the first spring tulips or the first snowfall. Talking with friends, family or a counselor who knows pet bereavement can help you carry it, a little at a time.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Holland?
The closest communities we cover are Saugatuck (about 9 miles), Wyoming (about 22 miles) and Walker (about 23 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Holland too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Holland page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 69.5%[5] of Michigan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is Holland big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 13,000 Holland households keep a dog or cat and around 1,100 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 35,372), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Will I have to travel to Grand Rapids to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Grand Rapids (roughly 25 miles from Holland) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Should young children come to a pet's farewell?
Usually yes, if they want to, with a simple role and a way to step out. Use plain words like 'died' rather than 'put to sleep', explain what they'll see, and keep it short. In a large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[7] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss, so you're far from alone in wondering.
Can I bring my pet home from the vet for a funeral in Holland?
Usually, yes. Ask the clinic to wrap your pet in a blanket or place them in a sturdy box, and bring a towel for the car. You may be asked to sign a release form. Once home, keep your pet cool and hold the farewell within a day, then bury them where local rules allow or call a crematory to collect. The vet can still arrange cremation later if you change your mind.
