Pet farewells in Lebanon: the local picture
A farewell doesn't need a venue. Some Lebanon families scatter a little ash along a field edge a pet loved, with permission from whoever owns the land, then share a meal afterward. Others mark the day the urn arrives by lighting a candle beside a favorite photograph and saying a few words. Children often cope better when they're given a job, such as picking flowers or writing a short note to read out.
Saying goodbye in Lebanon is often done at home: a visiting veterinarian, a blanket on the living room floor, and time for everyone in the family to sit with the animal before the provider arrives. If you'd like that, call your clinic well ahead, as home appointments book up. Ask too whether the practice travels to addresses outside the city limits, since some county roads are a long way out.
In-home vets are fewer around smaller places like Lebanon, and one may cover a wide area, so a home goodbye often needs booking several days ahead. If timing is uncertain, ask your usual clinic whether they'd visit in an emergency, or whether they have a side room with its own door so you can avoid the waiting room.
Lebanon's population is around 17,913, the 50th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Lebanon are based about 24 miles away in Indianapolis, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Zionsville (8 miles), Brownsburg (15 miles) and Westfield (16 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Lebanon too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
6,600
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Lebanon
How we calculated this
17,913 ÷ 2.5 = 7,165 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,600. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
550
Estimated dog and cat losses in Lebanon each year
How we calculated this
6,600 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 550 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

What local burial and cremation customs suggest
Cremation now accounts for about 56.5%[5] of deaths in Indiana, but burial still has deep roots. You may find the family split, with older relatives wanting a grave and younger ones preferring ashes at home. Burying the ashes after cremation often settles it: there's a place to visit, and the ceremony can wait for good weather.
That Indiana rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Lebanon only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Lebanon weather and your pet's farewell
Winter farewells in Lebanon often move indoors, and that can be lovely: a fire or candles, a blanket, your pet on their own bed and the family close. If you want a symbolic outdoor moment, a single lantern placed in the snow at the spot where the grave or tree will go in spring is simple and memorable.
If you'd hoped to bury your pet in a Lebanon garden in winter, ask a pet cemetery whether they can open a grave in frozen ground. Some can with the right equipment, some hold pets until the thaw, and some offer a winter service with the burial done later. Ask what happens and when before you choose.

Budgeting for a farewell in Lebanon
It helps to see the whole bill at once. By our estimate, a typical US dog's end-of-life care comes to about $670 with a home euthanasia and private cremation, against about $399 when the goodbye happens in the clinic [6]. The farewell on top can be as small as a candle or as large as a cemetery service, so decide where the goodbye happens first.

Before you dig or scatter in Indiana
A farewell itself needs no permission anywhere: you can gather, speak and say goodbye at home as you wish. The rules start when the body or the ashes go into the ground or the open air. Here's what applies in Indiana for burying at home and scattering ashes.
The official Indiana local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Lebanon.
The rules that apply across Indiana (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Indiana page. Lebanon may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
Your checklist for the first day
- Take a breath. If your pet has died at home, lay them on their bed or a towel in a cool room. Nothing has to happen in the next hour.
- Decide cremation or burial first. Everything else, the timing of the goodbye included, follows from this single decision.
- Call the vet, crematory or pet cemetery to reserve a slot, and find out if they can hold your pet in cold storage in the meantime.
- Send one short message to the few people who should be there, with the time and place.
- Choose a spot and one small ritual: a lit candle, a song, a note beneath a paw, or their best-loved toy beside them.
- Hold the farewell, and afterwards either bury your pet or pass them over to whoever is collecting.
- Ask for the written total before collection, including any viewing or ceremony fee.
The weeks and months after the goodbye
Grief after losing an animal doesn't follow a schedule, and it can hit harder in a small town where the pet was known to neighbors and at the feed store. If the sadness lingers, grief lines run by pet-loss charities take calls from anywhere, and Indianapolis has more in-person options about half an hour away. Telling friends plainly what happened often makes the first few weeks easier.

Questions people ask
How does Lebanon's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Lebanon, with average highs around 83°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Is cremation common in Indiana?
For people, yes: about 56.5%[5] of Indiana deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Lebanon follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Lebanon?
The closest communities we cover are Zionsville (about 8 miles), Brownsburg (about 15 miles) and Westfield (about 16 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Lebanon too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Indianapolis to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Indianapolis (roughly 24 miles from Lebanon) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can we plan a pet funeral in Lebanon within a day?
Yes, most pet farewells are arranged that quickly. In the morning, decide cremation or burial and call to hold a time. By midday, message the few people who should come. In the afternoon, choose the spot, a blanket, a candle and something to read. Hold the farewell in the evening, then hand your pet over or lay them to rest.
How much does a pet funeral cost in Lebanon?
The farewell itself can cost almost nothing if you hold it at home. The main costs are body care: in the US, private dog cremation averages about $260[8] and pet cemetery burial about $831[9]. A home visit from the vet for the goodbye averages about $410[10]. Viewings, witnessed cremation, flowers and a headstone add to that, so ask Lebanon providers for a written, itemized total.
