Kokomo, Indiana
What planning a pet funeral in Kokomo is like
Factory shifts, farm chores and long commutes don't pause for grief, and losing a pet can hit harder when you have no time to stop. It helps to tell a supervisor or a friend what happened. Pet-loss phone lines run by veterinary colleges answer calls in the evening, and a few minutes talking to someone who gets it can make a difference.
Many Kokomo pet owners would rather their animal not face one last car ride, and a few vets in north-central Indiana make house calls for euthanasia. You can set the time, choose the room and have family around. The crew who handles the cremation will come later, and you can ask them to wait in the car until you're ready.
Pet cemeteries are rarer in and around Kokomo, so families who want a permanent grave often choose the garden instead, or bury the ashes after cremation. If you rent, or might move, burying ashes in a large planter or keeping them at home keeps the memorial portable while still giving you a graveside moment.
With roughly 59,999 residents, Kokomo is the 15th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Indianapolis, about 48 miles (78 km) away, which is where some providers serving Kokomo are based.
Our pages for Logansport (23 miles), Marion (25 miles) and Westfield (30 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Kokomo as well.
Our estimate
22,000
Kokomo: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
59,999 ÷ 2.5 = 24,000 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 22,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,850
dog and cat deaths per year in Kokomo, our estimate
How we calculated this
22,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,850 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

What local funeral habits mean for your pet
When a place splits its funerals between burial and cremation, as Indiana does with about 56.5%[5] cremated, local providers usually offer both, and the choice often comes down to one question: do you want a place to visit, or something to keep close? A grave fixes the memorial to one spot; ashes can move house with you.
That Indiana rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Kokomo only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Kokomo weather and your pet's farewell
Cold weather gives you a little more time before a home farewell has to end, but it also makes outdoor goodbyes harder. With January lows near 17°F in Kokomo, keep any outdoor part short, with hats, gloves and a warm room to go back to. The words can be said indoors by the window facing the garden.
If you'd hoped to bury your pet in a Kokomo garden in winter, ask a pet cemetery whether they can open a grave in frozen ground. Some can with the right equipment, some hold pets until the thaw, and some offer a winter service with the burial done later. Ask what happens and when before you choose.

Budgeting for a farewell in Kokomo
Ask every provider in Kokomo to split the quote in two: body care (collection, cremation or burial, the container) and the farewell (viewing time, witnessed cremation, a graveside service). Seeing the two numbers apart makes it easy to drop what you don't need. The national figures below show what's typical.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Indiana: Indiana costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Indiana allows for burial and scattering
A grave in the garden stays with the house when you sell it, which is the question few people ask at the graveside. Before you bury, think about where you'll be living in five or ten years, then check the Indiana notes below.
The official Indiana local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Kokomo.
The rules that apply across Indiana (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Indiana page. Kokomo may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
From first call to farewell: the steps
- If the goodbye is planned, ask your vet about a home visit and book it early; in-home vets serving Kokomo can be booked up days ahead.
- Tell the vet what you'd like around it: some quiet beforehand, some afterwards, and no pickup until everyone in the family says they're ready.
- Prepare the room: dim lights, phones out of sight, a blanket, the bed they know.
- Give each person, including children, one small job, whether that's picking a flower or reading a single sentence aloud.
- Say a few words. One memory per person is enough, and laughing is fine.
- Plan a second gathering around the ashes' return, so anyone who missed the first can still take part.
Keeping their memory alive in Kokomo
Kokomo families sometimes hold a small send-off in the yard, with a favorite toy, a blanket and a few words from whoever knew the pet best. Faith plays a big part for many households here, and a pastor may be glad to offer a blessing. Letting kids write a note or pick a flower gives them a way to take part.

Questions people ask
Does the Kokomo climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Where are the providers that serve Kokomo actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Indianapolis, about 48 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Kokomo and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Kokomo page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 56.5%[5] of Indiana residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How many pet owners live in Kokomo?
By our estimate, about 22,000 households in Kokomo have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,850 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 59,999, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can I be there when my pet is cremated if I live in Kokomo?
Possibly, but it may mean a drive. Smaller places often send pets to a crematory in a larger centre such as Indianapolis, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly. Some families take their pet there themselves, hold the farewell in the car park or a quiet room, and stay while the cremation begins.
Do people hold funerals for hamsters, birds and other small pets?
Plenty do. A small pet's farewell needs little more than a lined box, a few words and a flower, and children often need it more than adults expect. Choose a garden grave where local rules allow and you expect to stay, or ask a crematory about individual cremation for small animals, since the amount of ash is tiny. Mark the spot with a stone or a pot plant.
