How families in Rome say goodbye to a pet
Rome is a close-knit small city where people tend to know one another through church, school or work, and that network can be a real comfort after a pet dies. Let a friend drive you to the clinic or sit with you while you wait for collection. A few quiet minutes at home, with the animal's bed and toys nearby, is a fitting goodbye.
Grief support for Rome residents is more limited locally than in Atlanta, but university pet-loss phone lines and internet support circles are open to anyone, and some counselors offer sessions by video. Losing an animal can hurt as deeply as any loss, and it may catch you off guard weeks later. When ordinary days still feel impossible after a month or so, a visit to your physician is worthwhile.
A small-town farewell can be as simple as a walk. Some families in and around Rome take their dog's usual route one last time with the lead in hand, then gather at home for the vet's visit or the burial. It costs nothing, needs no permission and gives everyone something to do with their hands and feet while they grieve.
About 38,934 people live in Rome, which makes it the 30th-largest of the 68 Georgia communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Rome are based about 58 miles away in Atlanta, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Calhoun (22 miles), Cartersville (23 miles) and Acworth (32 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Rome routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
14,500
How many dog- or cat-owning households Rome has (estimate)
How we calculated this
38,934 ÷ 2.5 = 15,574 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 14,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,200
Estimated dog and cat losses in Rome each year
How we calculated this
14,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,200 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Local customs and your pet's farewell
Some pet cemeteries also run a crematory, which suits Georgia, with cremation at roughly 54.2%[5] and burial still common. If there's one near you, you can see a grave site and ask about cremation in the same visit, then decide with both options in front of you rather than on the phone.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Georgia figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Rome tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Planning around heat, cold and rain in Rome
Wherever you are, the same rule holds: keep your pet cool, indoors and out of direct sun while you plan the farewell. In warm weather, hold the home goodbye within a few hours or ask the vet to hold your pet in a cold room. In cold weather you have more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial.

The real cost of a pet goodbye in Rome
Being present costs extra. One US pricing guide says viewing or witnessing a cremation typically adds $25 to $100 [6], and the posted surcharges we found run from $25 to $350, with a median of about $125 by our estimate [7]. Ask Rome crematories whether a short viewing is already included before paying for a separate appointment.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Georgia: Georgia costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Permissions to check in Georgia before the ceremony
Most of what happens at a pet funeral is up to you. The exceptions are home burial, which Georgia and your city or county may regulate, and scattering ashes in parks or on land you don't own, which usually needs the owner's permission. The key points are below.
The official Georgia local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Rome.
Start with the Georgia rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Rome's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Your checklist for the first day
- If the goodbye is planned, ask your vet about a home visit and book it early; in-home vets serving Rome can be booked up days ahead.
- Tell the vet what you'd like around it: time before, time after, and collection only once the family is ready.
- Prepare the room: your pet's bed, a blanket, soft light, phones away.
- Give each person, including children, one small job, such as choosing a flower or reading a line.
- Say a few words. One memory per person is enough, and laughing is fine.
- Plan a second gathering for when the ashes come home, if more people want to be there.
Remembering your pet in Rome
In Rome, a farewell might be a drive along the rivers to a spot you visited together, a small service in the backyard with family, or a simple prayer at the dinner table. Children often want to help make something, like a painted stone or a photo board. Take the time you need; nothing about the ashes has to be decided quickly.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Rome?
Usually yes. Calhoun is about 22 miles away, Cartersville is about 23 miles away and Acworth is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many pets die in Rome each year?
Our estimate is around 1,200. It comes from Rome's population (about 38,934), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 14,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Is cremation common in Georgia?
For people, yes: about 54.2%[5] of Georgia deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rome follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Rome actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Atlanta, about 58 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Rome and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is a pet funeral common in Georgia?
Small farewells are common almost everywhere, even if people don't call them funerals. For people, about 54.2%[5] of deaths in Georgia end in cremation, and that shapes pet habits too: where cremation is usual, pet farewells often centre on the ashes; where burial is usual, a graveside moment in the garden feels more natural.
What if there's no pet cemetery near Rome?
That's common in smaller places. Families often choose a garden burial where rules allow, or cremation followed by burying the ashes, which needs only a small hole and can happen whenever suits. If you want a cemetery grave, look toward a larger centre such as Atlanta, and ask whether they'll hold a graveside service when you arrive.
