Louisville, Colorado
How families in Louisville say goodbye to a pet
For households who lived through the Marshall Fire, a later loss can stir up the smoke, the scramble and the months of displacement all over again. Feeling that is ordinary. If it becomes too much, a grief therapist familiar with disaster recovery or a group for bereaved animal owners can help, and children may need extra reassurance if they link the two events in their minds.
Some families mark a pet's life on a quiet evening beside Harper Lake or with a small gathering at home, passing around photos and stories. Others prefer a more formal farewell arranged through a provider. Both approaches are fine. What matters is giving the loss a moment of real attention before the routines of school, work and errands pick up again.
In Louisville, the church hall, the community centre or a friendly café may be the natural place to gather after a pet's farewell, especially if half the town knew your dog from walks down the main street. A tea urn, a table of photos and an hour on a weekday afternoon is often all it takes.
Louisville's population is around 20,581, the 31st-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Louisville are based about 18 miles away in Denver, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Louisville sits within easy reach of Lafayette (3 miles), Broomfield (5 miles, a larger centre) and Erie (7 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Louisville; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
7,550
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Louisville
How we calculated this
20,581 ÷ 2.5 = 8,232 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,550. Multi-pet homes count once.

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in Colorado
In Colorado, where about 77.4%[5] of people are cremated, many families already have a family urn on a shelf or a plot of ashes in a memorial garden. Some choose to keep their pet's ashes alongside, or to bring them to the same place. If that matters to you, ask the cemetery or memorial garden what they allow before promising it to the family.

Seasons, timing and ceremonies in Louisville
Snow and ice across January, February, March, November and December can delay collection and make roads unsafe for relatives driving in. If your pet is old or very ill and a winter storm is forecast, it's reasonable to ask your vet now how a home goodbye and collection would work in bad weather, rather than on the night.
If you'd hoped to bury your pet in a Louisville garden in winter, ask a pet cemetery whether they can open a grave in frozen ground. Some can with the right equipment, some hold pets until the thaw, and some offer a winter service with the burial done later. Ask what happens and when before you choose.

The real cost of a pet goodbye in Louisville
If cost is on your mind, you're in good company: in a survey of more than 2,000 US owners, 61% said the cost of body care worried them [6]. Cemetery burial is less alarming for smaller pets. Across five posted US price lists, the median whole-body burial for a small pet, plot and opening included, is ~$350[7] by our estimate. Ask cemeteries near Louisville for a cremains plot price too.

Burial, scattering and gathering rules in Colorado
Pet cemeteries, parks and private gardens all have different rules. A cemetery handles the permissions for you; a garden burial or a scattering in public is your responsibility. If you rent, ask the landlord before digging. Here's what to know in Colorado.

What to do first, and what can wait
- Keep your pet cool and indoors, especially in warm weather, while you make calls.
- Ask whether a viewing room or witnessed cremation is possible, and how far ahead it needs booking.
- For a pet cemetery burial, ask what the plot and grave opening cost, whether a casket or shroud is needed, and if a service at the grave is allowed that day.
- For a home burial, check the Colorado rules, choose a spot away from water and drains, and dig before the family arrives.
- Collect a keepsake first: the tags and collar, a snip of fur, an impression of a paw.
- Confirm the price in writing before anyone collects your pet.
- Write down the date you're told the ashes will return, so you can plan what comes next.
Keeping their memory alive in Louisville
Louisville is small enough that neighbors on the same block may have greeted your pet for years. Letting them know what happened, even with a brief message, opens the door for people to share their own memories, which many families find unexpectedly comforting. A few quiet minutes together in the garden, before your pet is collected or driven to a provider, gives everyone a proper goodbye.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Louisville?
Usually yes. Lafayette is about 3 miles away, Broomfield is about 5 miles away and Erie is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Denver to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Denver (roughly 18 miles from Louisville) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Louisville climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 88°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How do Colorado attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Colorado human cremation rate at about 77.4%[5]. We show it on the Louisville page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Should young children come to a pet's farewell?
Usually yes, if they want to, with a simple role and a way to step out. Use plain words like 'died' rather than 'put to sleep', explain what they'll see, and keep it short. In a large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[9] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss, so you're far from alone in wondering.
What can I send with my pet for cremation or burial?
Most crematories let a blanket, a letter, a drawing or a small soft toy go with your pet. Many ask you to remove metal tags, plastic toys and rubber collars, which don't burn cleanly, so keep those as keepsakes instead. For a garden grave, choose natural materials such as cotton, wool or untreated wood. If something must come back to you, say so before the handover, not after.
