Vallejo, California
Where a goodbye can happen in Vallejo
Vallejo has close-knit neighborhoods, and extended families often live nearby, so a pet's death can bring several generations together. Some want a prayer or a small gathering before collection. A few minutes together at home, with a favorite blanket or toy, gives everyone a chance to say goodbye. Ask whether pickup can be timed so the whole family can be there.
Many Vallejo residents commute long distances to San Francisco, Oakland or Sacramento, and a pet's death can come in the middle of a busy week. It's fine to take the time you need. Receiving the ashes after an individual cremation lets you plan a farewell for a weekend or a day when relatives can come, whether at home or by the water.
If you want a graveside service, check early whether there's a pet cemetery that serves Vallejo. Some mid-size cities have one, many rely on a cemetery in a neighboring area, and a few human cemeteries now set aside a pet section. Ask about opening fees, weekend services and whether you can bring your own flowers and readings.
Vallejo's population is around 123,287, the 47th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Oakland, roughly 20 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Vallejo run from there.
The closest communities we cover are American Canyon (5 miles), Hercules (6 miles) and Benicia (7 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Vallejo too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
45,500
Vallejo: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
123,287 ÷ 2.5 = 49,315 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 45,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
3,800
Vallejo families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
45,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,800 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

What local funeral habits mean for your pet
In California, where about 70.5%[5] of people are cremated, many families already have a family urn on a shelf or a plot of ashes in a memorial garden. Some choose to keep their pet's ashes alongside, or to bring them to the same place. If that matters to you, ask the cemetery or memorial garden what they allow before promising it to the family.
The California figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
How the seasons in Vallejo affect the day
Candles, flowers and printed photos all suffer in Vallejo's summer heat, with highs near 90°F. For an outdoor ceremony, use battery candles or lanterns, keep flowers in water until the last minute and print photos on card rather than paper. Small practical choices like these keep the farewell calm instead of frantic.
By July, garden soil around Vallejo can bake as hard as brick. If you're planning a home burial, soak the spot with a hose the evening before, dig at first light and lay a board over the hole if you need to pause. Two people make lighter work of it, and nobody grieving should be digging at noon.

What a pet funeral costs in Vallejo
Being present costs extra. One US pricing guide says viewing or witnessing a cremation typically adds $25 to $100 [6], and the posted surcharges we found run from $25 to $350, with a median of about $125 by our estimate [7]. Ask Vallejo crematories whether a short viewing is already included before paying for a separate appointment.

What California allows for burial and scattering
Beaches, rivers and lakes often have their own scattering rules, set by a different authority from parks, and some ask you to scatter a set distance from shore. Here's the general picture for California; for the exact spot, check with whoever manages that land or water.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the California level first; our California rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Vallejo or your HOA adds anything.
A simple plan for the hours ahead
- Check gently that your pet has died: no breath, no heartbeat under your hand, eyes open and unmoving. Call an emergency vet if any doubt remains.
- Close the eyes if you can and curl the legs softly so your pet looks asleep; do this inside the first two hours or so, while the body is still supple.
- Slide an old towel or puppy pad underneath. After death the bowel and bladder often release on their own. This is expected and isn't a sign that something was wrong.
- Let your other animals come and sniff should they show interest. Plenty of owners believe this helps the remaining pets make sense of why the bed is now empty.
- If it's the middle of the night and the house is cool, leave the calls until morning. A quiet night beside your pet is allowed.
- Before collection or burial, hold ten minutes of goodbye, so that the last thing you remember is your own farewell and not an unfamiliar face at the door.

Questions people ask
Why does the Vallejo page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is Vallejo big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 45,500 Vallejo households keep a dog or cat and around 3,800 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 123,287), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Vallejo?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 90°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Vallejo?
Usually yes. American Canyon is about 5 miles away, Hercules is about 6 miles away and Benicia is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I be there when my pet is cremated if I live in Vallejo?
Possibly, but it may mean a drive. Smaller places often send pets to a crematory in a larger centre such as Oakland, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly. Some families take their pet there themselves, hold the farewell in the car park or a quiet room, and stay while the cremation begins.
Do pet funeral homes exist near Vallejo?
Some pet crematories have a farewell or viewing room, some pet cemeteries host graveside services, and a few human funeral homes offer pet services. In a city the size of Vallejo you may find several of these. Tell us what you'd like and where your pet is now, and we'll email options that serve your area.
