Pet farewells in Richmond: the local picture
Richmond is a close-knit city for its size, with long-standing neighbourhoods and families who have lived in the same streets for generations. When a pet dies, a small farewell at home with the relatives and neighbours who knew it can matter a great deal. Take the time you need before collection; nobody should hurry that moment. In apartment buildings, a quiet word to close neighbours can spare you questions in the hallway later.
If grief is still heavy after the first few weeks, a counsellor or an online pet-loss group can help, and your vet may know of local options. Some Richmond families find comfort in a slow morning along the Bay Trail watching the ferries and the bridges, or in marking the anniversary with a gift to an East Bay animal rescue.
If you want a graveside service, check early whether there's a pet cemetery that serves Richmond. Some mid-size cities have one, many rely on a cemetery in a neighboring area, and a few human cemeteries now set aside a pet section. Ask about opening fees, weekend services and whether you can bring your own flowers and readings.
With roughly 114,861 residents, Richmond is the 54th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Oakland, roughly 11 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Richmond run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for San Pablo (1 miles), El Cerrito (4 miles) and Pinole (5 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
42,500
Richmond: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
114,861 ÷ 2.5 = 45,944 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 42,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
3,500
Richmond families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
42,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,500 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in California
With cremation the choice for roughly 70.5%[5] of people in California, plenty of families skip an open viewing for relatives and go straight to a memorial. You may feel the same about your pet, and that's fine. Others find a few quiet minutes with their pet's body makes the loss real in a helpful way. Ask each person what they want rather than assuming.
For the California figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Richmond rather than as pet data.
Richmond weather and your pet's farewell
Gentle weather in Richmond suits the kind of farewell pets would have enjoyed: a picnic on a favorite field, a slow walk along a river path, a barbecue with the neighbours who threw the ball back over the fence. Bring a folding table, a framed photo and a water bowl for any dog guests, and let it be sociable.
In a mild place like Richmond, many families hold two farewells: a quiet one on the day, and a celebration of life in the garden or a park a few weeks later, when the ashes are home. The weather rarely gets in the way, so pick the date that suits people, such as a weekend or the pet's birthday.

Pet farewell prices for Richmond families
If cost is on your mind, you're in good company: in a survey of more than 2,000 US owners, 61% said the cost of body care worried them [6]. Cemetery burial is less alarming for smaller pets. Across five posted US price lists, the median whole-body burial for a small pet, plot and opening included, is ~$350[7] by our estimate. Ask cemeteries near Richmond for a cremains plot price too.

What California allows for burial and scattering
Rules for ashes are usually looser than rules for a body, because cremated remains are dry, processed bone rather than tissue. That's why burying or scattering ashes is often the simpler route to a graveside or outdoor ceremony. Here are the notes for California on both.
California keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Richmond.
For California's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the California guide. Local rules in Richmond can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Planning a farewell in Richmond, step by step
- Check gently that your pet has died: no breath, no heartbeat under your hand, eyes open and unmoving. Call an emergency vet if any doubt remains.
- Close the eyes if you can and curl the legs softly so your pet looks asleep; do this inside the first two hours or so, while the body is still supple.
- Slide an old towel or puppy pad underneath. After death the bowel and bladder often release on their own. This is expected and isn't a sign that something was wrong.
- Let your other animals come and sniff should they show interest. Plenty of owners believe this helps the remaining pets make sense of why the bed is now empty.
- If it's the middle of the night and the house is cool, the calls can wait for daylight. Nobody minds if you spend one last quiet night beside them.
- Before collection or burial, hold ten minutes of goodbye, so the last memory is yours and not a stranger at the front door.
Remembering your pet in Richmond
Children in Richmond often meet death for the first time through a pet. Include them if you can: a drawing, a note or a favourite toy placed beside the pet gives them something to do with feelings they cannot yet name. Say what cremation is in short, truthful sentences and let them come back with questions over the following days.

Questions people ask
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[5]. We show it on the Richmond page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Richmond?
Usually yes. San Pablo is about 1 miles away, El Cerrito is about 4 miles away and Pinole is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Richmond climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In September, with highs near 70°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Will I have to travel to Oakland to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Oakland (roughly 11 miles from Richmond) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I combine a farewell with water cremation near Richmond?
Yes. Water cremation, or aquamation, still returns ashes, so you can hold a viewing before or a celebration of life afterwards just as you would with flame cremation. Fewer providers offer it, and it may mean a longer drive from Richmond. Ask early, and expect a slightly longer wait for the ashes.
Can I have a religious blessing at my pet's farewell?
Yes. Many clergy will say a short blessing for an animal if asked, at home or by a grave, and some pet cemeteries can suggest a celebrant. Start with your own faith community. In Japan, some pet memorial parks include chanting by a monk at a witnessed cremation, which shows how naturally faith and pet funerals can sit together.
