Foley, Alabama
Where a goodbye can happen in Foley
If grief lingers after losing a pet, it doesn't mean you're overreacting; for many people the animal was the closest companion they had. A pet loss support line or online group can help, and some people in south Baldwin find comfort through their church or a community group. Your vet's office may also know of support options closer to Foley, Gulf Shores or across the state line in Pensacola.
Foley is a mix of old Baldwin County farming families and newcomers who arrived from the Midwest, the Northeast and beyond. Traditions around death vary widely here: some gather for prayers at the graveside, others share a meal and stories. There's no correct way to say farewell to an animal you loved. What matters is taking the time to mark the loss together.
Neighbours in a place like Foley often offer to help, and it's fine to say yes. Someone with a small digger or a strong back can prepare a grave, a friend can mind the children for an hour, and someone else can bring supper so nobody has to cook that night. Accepting help is part of how small communities mark a loss.
With roughly 30,354 residents, Foley is the 21st-largest of the 37 Alabama communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Foley are based about 30 miles away in Mobile, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Foley sits within easy reach of Fairhope (15 miles), Daphne (20 miles) and Pensacola (29 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Foley; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
11,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Foley
How we calculated this
30,354 ÷ 2.5 = 12,142 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 11,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
930
dog and cat deaths per year in Foley, our estimate
How we calculated this
11,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 930 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in Alabama
With about 42.3%[5] of people cremated, Alabama is a place where funerals often mean a burial, a service and a gathering afterwards. Many families want something similar for a pet, on a smaller scale. A pet cemetery gives you that most fully; a garden burial with neighbors invited and food afterwards comes close for much less.
The Alabama figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
When the weather shapes the goodbye
Outdoor farewells in Foley are easiest early in the morning or after sunset in May, June, July, August and September. A garden burial in the midday heat is hard work for whoever digs, and grieving people get light-headed quickly. Set out water, shade and chairs for older relatives, and keep the words short. You can always gather indoors afterwards.
If family need a day or two to arrive in hot weather, don't try to keep your pet at home. Ask the vet or crematory to hold your pet in their cold room, then book a viewing there when everyone is in town. It gives you unhurried time together without worrying about the heat of July.

Pet farewell prices for Foley families
Being present costs extra. One US pricing guide says viewing or witnessing a cremation typically adds $25 to $100 [6], and the posted surcharges we found run from $25 to $350, with a median of about $125 by our estimate [7]. Ask Foley crematories whether a short viewing is already included before paying for a separate appointment.

What you can and can't do in Alabama
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug stays in the body, and wildlife or other animals can be poisoned if a grave is dug up. That risk is one reason home burial is regulated at all, and why a well-covered grave or cremation matters. Here's what Alabama says.
Alabama keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Foley.
The rules that apply across Alabama (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Alabama page. Foley may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A pet funeral within a day: how to do it
- Tell your child soon, somewhere quiet, in plain words: say the pet's name and that they died, rather than 'went to sleep' or 'went away'.
- Let them choose whether to see their pet ahead of the burial or pickup. Some children find that looking answers things they couldn't have asked out loud.
- Offer choices rather than jobs: which blanket, how to decorate the box, or whether to draw a card that goes with their pet.
- Keep the ceremony to about ten minutes with room to speak or stay silent, and no adult stepping in to fix it.
- Expect questions later, often at bedtime, and answer them honestly and briefly.
- Let their teacher or childminder know, so a quiet or tearful day makes sense to the adults around them.
Marking the loss, now and later
For many Foley retirees, a pet is the companion who shared the move south, the daily routine and the quiet evenings. When that animal dies, the house can feel strangely empty. A small farewell at home or at a favorite spot by the water can help, and so can telling friends what happened rather than keeping the loss to yourself.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Foley?
By our estimate, about 11,000 households in Foley have at least one dog or cat, and around 930 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 30,354, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Foley?
Usually yes. Fairhope is about 15 miles away, Daphne is about 20 miles away and Pensacola is about 29 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Mobile to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Mobile (roughly 30 miles from Foley) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How does Foley's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Foley, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Is a pet funeral common in Alabama?
Small farewells are common almost everywhere, even if people don't call them funerals. For people, about 42.3%[5] of deaths in Alabama end in cremation, and that shapes pet habits too: where cremation is usual, pet farewells often centre on the ashes; where burial is usual, a graveside moment in the garden feels more natural.
Should young children come to a pet's farewell?
Usually yes, if they want to, with a simple role and a way to step out. Use plain words like 'died' rather than 'put to sleep', explain what they'll see, and keep it short. In a large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[9] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss, so you're far from alone in wondering.
