A proper farewell for your pet in Belfast
By our estimate, about 105,000 households in Belfast have a dog or a cat, and roughly 8,400 of those pets die each year. Every one of those families decides how to say goodbye. Here's how to plan yours.

Where a goodbye can happen in Belfast
Grief often comes back unexpectedly: a collar or a food bowl in the cupboard, a familiar sound at the door. Marking the anniversary, planting something in the garden or writing down memories can help. If sadness stays heavy for weeks, a pet bereavement support line, your vet or a counsellor can help, and asking for help is a normal thing to do.
A farewell for a pet in Belfast can be whatever you need: a few quiet minutes at home, family gathered in the garden, or being present at the cremation. Some people bring a favourite blanket or toy to go with their pet. When you get in touch, tell us what matters to you, and we'll email you options that fit.
Around Belfast, people beyond the family may have known your pet too: the dog walker, the groomer, the neighbours who fed them treats over the fence. A short message or a note on a community board lets them know, and some will want to come or send a card. It also spares you telling the story again and again.
Belfast's population is around 343,000.

Our estimate
105,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Belfast
How we calculated this
343,000 ÷ 2.4 = 142,917 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 105,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
8,400
Estimated dog and cat losses in Belfast each year
How we calculated this
105,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 8,400 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in Northern Ireland
In Northern Ireland, about 24.2%[5] of people are cremated, so some relatives may feel uneasy about cremating a pet. It helps to explain that cremation can still include a graveside moment: the ashes can be buried in the garden or a pet cemetery with the same words, flowers and people you'd have at a burial, just on a day you choose.
We take the Northern Ireland rate from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Belfast, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Planning an outdoor goodbye in Belfast's climate
If you're planning an outdoor ceremony in Belfast, have a rain plan and a heat plan. A covered porch, a gazebo or a room with the doors open to the garden works for both. Keep the outdoor part to ten minutes or so, especially for older relatives and small children, and gather inside afterwards.

The real cost of a pet goodbye in Belfast
Most UK pet owners buy cremation through their vet, and 89%[6] of buyers didn't compare providers at all. If you want a farewell room, a witnessed service or simply a clearer price, a quick call to one or two independent crematoria is worth it. Communal cremation is 2x to 5x cheaper[7] but doesn't return ashes.

Local rules worth checking in Northern Ireland
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug stays in the body, and wildlife or other animals can be poisoned if a grave is dug up. That risk is one reason home burial is regulated at all, and why a well-covered grave or cremation matters. Here's what Northern Ireland says.
For what Belfast itself says, see Belfast City Council. Its pages cover municipal collection; a private cremation is arranged separately.
In England, you can bury a pet at home if you own the land or have the owner's agreement, and there's no set minimum depth for a small pet, but stay away from water sources. Pet cemeteries must register with the government's animal health agency and bury at least 0.5 m deep [9]. Scattering ashes on someone else's land needs their permission. Many crematoria will also let you sit with your pet first; ask.
The rules that apply across Northern Ireland (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Northern Ireland page. Belfast may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
From first call to farewell: the steps
- Find a small box and soft bedding, such as a shoebox lined with a cloth or some of their own nesting material.
- Choose between cremation and a garden grave. A very small animal produces only a trace of ash; ask the crematory how it's kept apart from other pets' and what container it's returned in.
- For a garden grave, choose ground you're likely to still own in years to come, look up what's allowed locally, and decide on a marker, whether a potted plant or a flat stone.
- Invite whoever looked after them, and that can be just a parent and a child. Small creatures leave surprisingly large holes.
- Say a few words or read a note, and finish by placing a flower, or a little of the food they loved most, on the box.
- Clear the cage, hutch or tank slowly over a few days, instead of all at once that afternoon, so the space empties gradually rather than in one go.
After the farewell: ways to keep the memory close
Belfast people are known for their warmth, but pet loss can still feel lonely when friends or colleagues don't quite understand. Grief for an animal is real, and it's normal for the house to feel very quiet for a while. Talk to someone who knew your pet, spend time somewhere you shared, and let yourself take things slowly. There's no set timetable for feeling better.

Questions people ask
How do Northern Ireland attitudes to cremation compare?
Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) puts the Northern Ireland human cremation rate at about 24.2%[5]. We show it on the Belfast page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Belfast?
Usually yes. Glasgow is about 110 miles away, Edinburgh is about 143 miles away and Liverpool is about 145 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Belfast big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 105,000 Belfast households keep a dog or cat and around 8,400 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 343,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Should young children come to a pet's farewell?
Usually yes, if they want to, with a simple role and a way to step out. Use plain words like 'died' rather than 'put to sleep', explain what they'll see, and keep it short. In a large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[10] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss, so you're far from alone in wondering.
Can I hold a funeral for my pet at home in Belfast?
Yes, and it's the most common kind of pet funeral. Choose a quiet room or a corner of the garden, lay your pet on their bed, invite the few people who should be there and plan one small ritual. Then ask the vet or crematory to collect afterwards, or go ahead with a home burial if Northern Ireland rules allow it.
What can I send with my pet for cremation or burial?
Most crematories let a blanket, a letter, a drawing or a small soft toy go with your pet. Many ask you to remove metal tags, plastic toys and rubber collars, which don't burn cleanly, so keep those as keepsakes instead. For a garden grave, choose natural materials such as cotton, wool or untreated wood. If something must come back to you, say so before the handover, not after.
