Pet Funerals in Northern Ireland: what to know
In the larger places across Northern Ireland, such as Belfast, families usually have a choice of crematories, in-home vets and at least one pet cemetery within reach. In smaller towns, the goodbye tends to happen at home or on family land, and the cremation itself takes place in a regional centre, which can mean a drive if you want to be present.
A pet farewell looks much the same anywhere in Northern Ireland: a place, a few people, a few words, then cremation or burial. What changes from one community to the next is everything around it: whether there's a crematory with a farewell room nearby, whether a pet cemetery is within driving distance, and what the local rules say about burying in the garden.

Local customs and your pet's farewell
In communities where burial is still the norm, like Northern Ireland at about 24.2%[1] cremated, sitting up with the body before a funeral is a remembered custom for some families. A short version works for a pet: keep them on their bed in a cool room for an evening so relatives can drop by, then bury or hand over in the morning. In warm weather, keep it to a few hours.
Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) publishes the Northern Ireland rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
The real cost of a pet goodbye in Northern Ireland
UK cremation prices are unusually well documented thanks to the Competition and Markets Authority's review. Individual dog cremation through the large vet groups had a median of about GBP 249.47[2], and independent crematoria often charge less. Farewell rooms and attended cremations aren't priced nationally, so ask each crematorium in or near Northern Ireland directly.
Pet cemeteries publish clearer prices than crematoria. At one Sussex pet cemetery, a green burial costs £650–£810[3] by weight and a formal burial with coffin and attended service £980–£1,140[4]. Burying ashes costs about one-eleventh of a whole-body green burial at the same cemetery, by our estimate [5], so it's worth asking cemeteries near Northern Ireland about both.

What Northern Ireland allows for burial and scattering
A farewell itself needs no permission anywhere: you can gather, speak and say goodbye at home as you wish. The rules start when the body or the ashes go into the ground or the open air. Here's what applies in Northern Ireland for burying at home and scattering ashes.
In England, you can bury a pet at home if you own the land or have the owner's agreement, and there's no set minimum depth for a small pet, but stay away from water sources. Pet cemeteries must register with the government's animal health agency and bury at least 0.5 m deep [11]. Scattering ashes on someone else's land needs their permission. Many crematoria will also let you sit with your pet first; ask.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
Planning a farewell in Northern Ireland, step by step
- Call the nearest emergency vet wherever you are. They can confirm the death, keep your pet cool and explain what's possible locally.
- Decide whether to bring your pet home or arrange cremation near where you are. Taking a body over a border or onto a flight is seldom straightforward.
- If you cremate away from home, find out how you'll get the ashes back: kept until you can pick them up, or posted with tracking and a signature on delivery.
- Say a short goodbye at the clinic before you leave, however incomplete it seems. A proper farewell can wait until you're back home.
- Keep the vet's paperwork and receipts together, since an airline, a border official or your insurer may want to see them.
- Hold the family farewell once your pet or the ashes are home, which gives everyone who didn't travel a share in the goodbye.
Remembering your pet in Northern Ireland
Children often want to keep doing something after the farewell. A memory box with the collar, a drawing and a photo, or a jar of notes written on the anniversary, gives them a way back to the feelings when they need it. Let them decide what goes in.

Questions people ask
How many families in Northern Ireland have a dog or cat?
By our estimate, about 105,000 households across the Northern Ireland communities we cover have a dog or cat. We add up per-city estimates based on population, household size and national ownership figures. Each of those families will one day decide how to say goodbye.
Do I need a permit to hold a pet funeral in Northern Ireland?
Not for the farewell itself. Gathering at home, saying a few words and holding a small ceremony need no permission anywhere in Northern Ireland. Permits come into it for what happens next: burial on someone else's land, scattering in parks, on beaches or on water, and any use of a public space for a larger gathering. When in doubt, ask the landowner or the local council first.
Can I bury my pet at home in Northern Ireland?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the wider rules. If you rent or might move, cremation followed by burying the ashes in a planter keeps the grave portable.
Can children be part of a pet's farewell in Northern Ireland?
Yes, and most families find it helps. Give each child a small job, such as choosing a flower or drawing a picture to go with the pet, use plain words like 'died', keep it short and let them step out whenever they want. Our blog has age-by-age ideas.
What does a pet cemetery burial cost in Northern Ireland?
Plot fees at UK pet cemeteries often run from £200 to £800 or more [8], depending on location and size, and a formal burial with an attended service costs more than a simple green burial. Annual maintenance fees are common. Burying ashes rather than a body keeps the cost much lower.
Can I be present at my pet's cremation in Northern Ireland?
Many crematories offer witnessed or attended cremation, especially around the larger cities. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. In rural parts of Northern Ireland, the nearest crematory that offers it may be some distance away, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly.
