Rotterdam, South Holland
What planning a pet funeral in Rotterdam is like
Rotterdam is home to people from well over a hundred nationalities, and many live far from the relatives who knew their pet. That distance can make grief lonelier. Letting colleagues and neighbors know, joining a pet-loss group online in Dutch or English, or speaking to your huisarts, the family doctor, about a referral are all reasonable steps if the sadness does not ease.
Dutch parents tend to talk openly with children about death, and that honesty helps when a family pet dies. Use clear words rather than phrases like 'gone to sleep', and let children help, perhaps drawing a picture for the urn or picking a plant for the balcony. Teachers at the basisschool are used to hearing about this and can keep an eye out.
In a city the size of Rotterdam, you usually have more choice of where a farewell happens than you realise. Several pet crematories serve most large metros, and some have a quiet farewell room where you can sit with your pet before cremation. In-home vets cover much of the city, so the goodbye itself can happen on the sofa, and a pet cemetery may be within an hour's drive. The hard part is choosing, not finding.
Rotterdam is home to about 651,000 people, the largest of the 2 South Holland communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at The Hague (13 miles), Utrecht (30 miles) and Haarlem (32 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
68.37%[1]
In 2023, 68.37% of deaths in the Netherlands were cremated (108 crematoria).
+$25–$100[2]
Memorials.com's pet cremation cost guide says viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds $25–$100.
$831[3]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).
68% cremation; 32% burial[4]
In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.

What local funeral habits mean for your pet
Even with cremation at around 68.37%[1] in Netherlands, grandparents may have grown up burying the family dog under a tree, while their grandchildren expect an urn on the shelf. Asking an older relative to lead one part of the farewell, perhaps choosing the spot or saying the first words, brings their experience into a goodbye the younger generation has planned.
We take the Netherlands rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Rotterdam, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Planning an outdoor goodbye in Rotterdam's climate
Seasonal flowers are the easiest way to mark a pet's farewell in Rotterdam: whatever is blooming in the garden or at the market that week. Lay a handful beside your pet or on the grave, and consider planting the same thing later so it comes into bloom again around the anniversary.

What a pet funeral costs in Rotterdam
Some European crematoria include a farewell room with individual cremation and leave it out of the cheaper shared option, so the price difference buys more than just the ashes. Ask exactly what's included before you compare. In the Netherlands, a few pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost, so check your policy too.

What you can and can't do in South Holland
A farewell itself needs no permission anywhere: you can gather, speak and say goodbye at home as you wish. The rules start when the body or the ashes go into the ground or the open air. Here's what applies in South Holland for burying at home and scattering ashes.
In the Netherlands, the food and consumer safety authority keeps a list of recognised pet crematoria, and several have farewell rooms. Four Dutch pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost [6], so check your policy before choosing. Cremating a pet in another EU country needs that country's permission, so a cross-border farewell takes extra planning.
A simple plan for the hours ahead
- Take a breath. When a pet dies at home, settle them onto a towel or their own bed somewhere cool. There is no decision you need to make within the hour.
- Decide cremation or burial first. That one choice sets the clock for everything else, including when the farewell can happen.
- Call the vet, crematory or pet cemetery to reserve a slot, and find out if they can hold your pet in cold storage in the meantime.
- Send one short message to the few people who should be there, with the time and place.
- Choose a spot and one small ritual: a candle, a letter tucked under a paw, a favorite toy, a song.
- Hold the farewell, then hand your pet to the collection team or lay them to rest.
- Ask for the written total before collection, including any viewing or ceremony fee.
Remembering your pet in Rotterdam
Rotterdammers are famous for plain speaking and getting on with things, yet the loss of a pet is taken seriously here. Saying goodbye in the flat before collection, lighting a candle, or inviting friends round once the ashes are home can all feel right. Some families choose a quiet moment on the water, on a ferry across the Maas or along the Nieuwe Maas quays.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Rotterdam?
The closest communities we cover are The Hague (about 13 miles), Utrecht (about 30 miles) and Haarlem (about 32 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Rotterdam too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Netherlands?
For people, yes: about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Rotterdam follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?
Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[7] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Be patient with yourself, keep eating and sleeping as best you can, and talk to someone who understands. Our grief check-in can help you notice when it may be time to ask for more support.
Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?
Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [8]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.
What can I send with my pet for cremation or burial?
Most crematories let a blanket, a letter, a drawing or a small soft toy go with your pet. Many ask you to remove metal tags, plastic toys and rubber collars, which don't burn cleanly, so keep those as keepsakes instead. For a garden grave, choose natural materials such as cotton, wool or untreated wood. If something must come back to you, say so before the handover, not after.
How much does a pet funeral cost in Rotterdam?
It depends mostly on whether you choose individual cremation, communal cremation or a cemetery grave, and on your pet's weight. Published examples are in the table on this page. A home ceremony before collection adds little. A viewing room, attended cremation or columbarium niche is priced by each provider, so ask for those items to be listed separately.
