Saying goodbye to your pet in Amsterdam, your way

Amsterdam, North Holland

Choosing where the farewell happens in Amsterdam

The grey, wet Amsterdam winter can make grief feel heavier, especially if your days were shaped around caring for an animal. Try to keep some structure: time outside when you can, a cycle through the Amsterdamse Bos, a regular call with a friend, something small in the evenings. A planned farewell gives the household a clear moment to share memories.

Amsterdammers are known for being direct, and many find it easier to say plainly that they are grieving than to hide it. If your pet was known on your street or in your building, let people know. A small farewell at home, a candle in the window, or coffee with friends who loved your pet can help everyone say goodbye before the cremation.

Long hours and commutes shape daily life in Amsterdam, and a pet's death rarely waits for a day off. In an RSPCA survey of bereaved UK owners, 28.4%[1] couldn't take time off work afterwards. An evening goodbye at home and a weekend gathering can fit around a working week, and asking your manager for a morning off is reasonable.

About 872,000 people live in Amsterdam, which makes it the largest of the 2 North Holland communities we cover.

The closest communities we cover are Haarlem (11 miles), Utrecht (21 miles) and The Hague (33 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Amsterdam too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

68.37%[2]

In 2023, 68.37% of deaths in the Netherlands were cremated (108 crematoria).

+$25–$100[3]

Memorials.com's pet cremation cost guide says viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds $25–$100.

$831[4]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).

68% cremation; 32% burial[5]

In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.

A pet at home in Amsterdam

Local customs and your pet's farewell

In a place where roughly 68.37%[2] of people are cremated, families follow a mix of faiths, some of which prefer burial for people. Many traditions say little about animals' remains, so a pet's farewell is usually a family choice. If it matters to you, a quick word with your faith leader before the vet visit saves second thoughts later.

The Netherlands figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Seasons, timing and ceremonies in Amsterdam

Seasons change the timing of a farewell more than its shape. Many families in Amsterdam hold the goodbye indoors on the day and move the outdoor part, such as burying ashes, planting a tree or scattering on a favorite walk, to a calmer day with kinder weather. There's no deadline on ashes.

The real cost of a pet goodbye in Amsterdam

In Amsterdam, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium. You can also contact a crematorium or pet cemetery directly, which is the easiest way to ask about a farewell room or an attended service. Always ask for individual cremation by name if you want the ashes back.

The full price table by product is on our North Holland page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What you can and can't do in North Holland

Rules for ashes are usually looser than rules for a body, because cremated remains are dry, processed bone rather than tissue. That's why burying or scattering ashes is often the simpler route to a graveside or outdoor ceremony. Here are the notes for North Holland on both.

In the Netherlands, the food and consumer safety authority keeps a list of recognised pet crematoria, and several have farewell rooms. Four Dutch pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost [7], so check your policy before choosing. Cremating a pet in another EU country needs that country's permission, so a cross-border farewell takes extra planning.

A pet funeral within a day: how to do it

  1. Find a small box and soft bedding, for instance a shoebox with a piece of cloth inside, or the nesting material they used themselves.
  2. Choose between cremation and a garden grave. Tiny pets leave very little ash, so ask the crematory how they keep it separate and what it comes back in.
  3. For a garden grave, choose ground you're likely to still own in years to come, look up what's allowed locally, and decide on a marker, whether a potted plant or a flat stone.
  4. Invite whoever looked after them, and that can be just a parent and a child. Small creatures leave surprisingly large holes.
  5. Say a few words or read a note, and finish by placing a flower, or a little of the food they loved most, on the box.
  6. Clear the cage, hutch or tank slowly over a few days, rather than the same afternoon, so the room doesn't feel suddenly empty.

After the farewell: ways to keep the memory close

Many Amsterdam residents live alone or moved here from abroad, and a pet is often the closest companion at home. After a loss, the silence in a small canal-side apartment can be hard to bear. Pet-loss support in the Netherlands is available in Dutch and English through vets, animal welfare organisations and online groups, and a small farewell with a friend or two can help. If grief lingers for weeks, your huisarts, the family GP, can also help.

Questions people ask

How do Netherlands attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Netherlands human cremation rate at about 68.37%[2]. We show it on the Amsterdam page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Amsterdam?

Usually yes. Haarlem is about 11 miles away, Utrecht is about 21 miles away and The Hague is about 33 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?

Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[8] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Be patient with yourself, keep eating and sleeping as best you can, and talk to someone who understands. Our grief check-in can help you notice when it may be time to ask for more support.

What do you say at a pet's funeral?

Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.

Can I bring my pet home from the vet for a funeral in Amsterdam?

Usually, yes. Ask the clinic to wrap your pet in a blanket or place them in a sturdy box, and bring a towel for the car. You may be asked to sign a release form. Once home, keep your pet cool and hold the farewell within a day, then bury them where local rules allow or call a crematory to collect. The vet can still arrange cremation later if you change your mind.

What's a viewing, and do I need one?

A viewing is unhurried time with your pet in a private room, usually at the crematory, vet or a funeral home, before cremation or burial. You don't need one, but it helps if you weren't there at the end, if relatives are arriving from out of town, or if children need to see that their pet has really died.
