A goodbye that fits life in Markham
Pet farewells in Markham range from a quiet goodbye at home to a small family ceremony with flowers, photos or incense, or attending the cremation. Some families want a religious or cultural element included; others prefer something simple. When you contact us, tell us what you'd like, and we'll email you options that fit. If grandparents or relatives abroad want to take part, a small ceremony can be timed or shared by video so they can join in.
Losing a pet can hit hard in a busy suburban household, where the animal was part of every routine: school runs, dinner, evenings on the couch. Children and older relatives may grieve differently. Talk openly as a family, let everyone share a memory, and allow time before thinking about another pet. There's no correct timetable. Keeping one familiar object, like a bed or a favourite blanket, can comfort children for a while.
Some families in Markham prefer to drive their pet to the crematory themselves rather than wait for a collection. It can remove the pickup fee, lets you choose the blanket and the moment of handover, and for some the drive turns into a quiet last outing together. Call ahead so someone is ready to meet you at the door.
Markham is home to about 338,000 people, the 7th-largest of the 15 Ontario communities we cover. Toronto, roughly 14 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Markham run from there.
Families in Markham often end up using a provider from Richmond Hill (5 miles), Vaughan (9 miles) and Toronto (14 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
81.1%[1]
CANA projects the Canadian cremation rate will reach 81.1% by 2030.
+$25–$100[2]
Memorials.com's pet cremation cost guide says viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds $25–$100.
$831[3]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).
68% cremation; 32% burial[4]
In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.
The published sources behind those figures are CareCredit (Synchrony) and Cooney, Kogan, Brooks, Ellis.

What local funeral habits mean for your pet
A high cremation rate, about 81.1%[1] in Canada, can make families assume every pet cremation is individual. It often isn't. Communal cremation returns no ashes, and 'partitioned' can mean several pets in the chamber at once. If you want your own pet's ashes back for a scattering or burial later, ask for 'private' or 'individual' in writing.
For the Canada figure we rely on CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Markham rather than as pet data.
How the seasons in Markham affect the day
Local weather affects two things about a pet funeral: how long a home goodbye can last, and whether an outdoor burial, planting or scattering is practical this week. Providers in Markham know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest now, and whether a viewing room is available if the weather is poor.

Budgeting for a farewell in Markham
Budget for yourself as well as your pet. A private pet-loss counselling hour costs CA$220 at one Calgary practice [5], about as much as a basic private cremation by our estimate [6], while several free pet-loss helplines exist. In Ontario, one aftercare provider lists private cremation at CAD 449 for pets under 25 lb [7]. Ask providers near Markham for their own written figures.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Ontario: Ontario costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Local rules worth checking in Ontario
Rules for ashes are usually looser than rules for a body, because cremated remains are dry, processed bone rather than tissue. That's why burying or scattering ashes is often the simpler route to a graveside or outdoor ceremony. Here are the notes for Ontario on both.
Across Canada, most farewells happen at home or through the family vet, and some crematories near larger cities have a family room for a short visit before cremation. Winter matters: in much of the country the ground is frozen for months, so many families hold the goodbye indoors and bury the ashes with a small ceremony in spring.
Start with the Ontario rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Markham's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Choose a day while your pet still has good moments, book the home visit, and settle the aftercare plan in the same phone call.
- Fill the days before with small favorites: a slow walk, a patch of sun, the treat that's usually off limits.
- Decide who will hold your pet and who would rather wait in another room. Staying and stepping out are equally loving, and no one should be pushed either way.
- Set out the blanket you're happy to send with them, with any drawing, note or toy that should go into the cremation or grave too.
- When the vet has finished, take as long as you need. The collection can wait an hour; ask them to step outside if you want privacy.
- Walk out to the car or van with your pet if you'd like to. Many teams use a stretcher or basket and will let you help carry.
Marking the loss, now and later
Long Ontario winters can make grief feel heavier, especially when days are short and you're spending more time at home. Small rituals help: a candle, a photo on a shelf, planting something in spring. If sadness hasn't lifted after several weeks, pet loss support groups, your vet or a counsellor can help, and asking for support is a sensible step.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Markham?
Usually yes. Richmond Hill is about 5 miles away, Vaughan is about 9 miles away and Toronto is about 14 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Canada attitudes to cremation compare?
CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030) puts the Canada human cremation rate at about 81.1%[1]. We show it on the Markham page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Where are the providers that serve Markham actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Toronto, about 14 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Markham and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Should young children come to a pet's farewell?
Usually yes, if they want to, with a simple role and a way to step out. Use plain words like 'died' rather than 'put to sleep', explain what they'll see, and keep it short. In a large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[9] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss, so you're far from alone in wondering.
Can I bury my pet in the backyard in Markham?
Often, but it's decided locally. In Australia and New Zealand, councils set the rules and many restrict backyard burial on suburban blocks; in Canada, municipalities and provinces set conditions such as depth and distance from water. In colder areas, frozen ground can rule it out for months. Ask your council or city office before digging, or bury the ashes later.
Do pet funeral homes exist near Markham?
Some pet crematories have a farewell or viewing room, some pet cemeteries host graveside services, and a few human funeral homes offer pet services. In a city the size of Markham you may find several of these. Tell us what you'd like and where your pet is now, and we'll email options that serve your area.
