Pet Funerals in Ontario

Pet Funerals in Ontario: what to know

Faith, family and local custom all shape a pet's farewell in Ontario. Some families want a blessing, some a quiet hour, some a gathering with food and stories. There's no correct form, and you can borrow freely from whatever traditions you have. Below you'll find the practical side: costs, rules and a simple plan.

Across Ontario, the question families ask first isn't where to hold a funeral, it's whether they're allowed to bury their pet at home. The answer depends on depth, distance from water and who owns the land, and cities can be stricter than the wider rules. The notes below summarise what applies in Ontario.

We cover 15 communities in Ontario, from Toronto, Ottawa and Mississauga to smaller towns.

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in Ontario

About 81.1%[1] of people in Ontario are cremated, so most families here have been to a cremation service and know how one feels. That familiarity carries over to pets: a viewing before cremation, a few words said and ashes brought home is a pattern people recognise. It also means crematories are well established, and a farewell room or witnessed cremation is easier to find.

Pet funeral and burial prices for families in Ontario

Across Canada, most families arrange aftercare through their vet, but crematories and pet cemeteries will also deal with you directly. That's the easiest way to ask about a viewing, an attended cremation or a graveside service. The table shows published Canadian prices so you know what's typical in Ontario.

Canadian pet funeral costs follow the same pattern as elsewhere: body care first, farewell second. A Vancouver Island crematorium lists private dog cremation at CAD 195-315[2] by size, while Ontario providers list more. Some crematories near larger cities have a family room for a short visit; ask whether it's included when you call from Ontario.

Permissions to check in Ontario before the ceremony

Rules for ashes are usually looser than rules for a body, because cremated remains are dry, processed bone rather than tissue. That's why burying or scattering ashes is often the simpler route to a graveside or outdoor ceremony. Here are the notes for Ontario on both.

Across Canada, most farewells happen at home or through the family vet, and some crematories near larger cities have a family room for a short visit before cremation. Winter matters: in much of the country the ground is frozen for months, so many families hold the goodbye indoors and bury the ashes with a small ceremony in spring.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

A pet funeral within a day: how to do it

  1. Check gently that your pet has died: no breathing, no heartbeat against the chest, eyes open and still. If you're not sure, ring an emergency vet.
  2. Close the eyes if you can and curl the legs softly so your pet looks asleep; do this inside the first two hours or so, while the body is still supple.
  3. Slide an old towel or puppy pad underneath. After death the bowel and bladder often release on their own. This is expected and isn't a sign that something was wrong.
  4. Let your other animals come and sniff should they show interest. Plenty of owners believe this helps the remaining pets make sense of why the bed is now empty.
  5. If it's the middle of the night and the house is cool, leave the calls until morning. A quiet night beside your pet is allowed.
  6. Before collection or burial, hold ten minutes of goodbye, so that the last thing you remember is your own farewell and not an unfamiliar face at the door.

Anniversaries, gatherings and quiet reminders

Children often want to keep doing something after the farewell. A memory box with the collar, a drawing and a photo, or a jar of notes written on the anniversary, gives them a way back to the feelings when they need it. Let them decide what goes in.

Questions people ask

Can I be present at my pet's cremation in Ontario?

Many crematories offer witnessed or attended cremation, especially around the larger cities. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. In rural parts of Ontario, the nearest crematory that offers it may be some distance away, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly.

What usually happens at a pet funeral in Ontario?

Most follow a loose shape: family gathers around the pet at home, at the clinic or in a farewell room at the crematory; someone says a few words; each person has a moment to say goodbye; then the pet is collected, cremated or buried. Many add one ritual, such as a candle, a flower or a letter. The whole thing often takes less than an hour.

How long does it take to get my pet's ashes back in Ontario?

Usually one to two weeks for a private cremation, though it varies by provider and country. In the US, 5–10 days is commonly quoted [7], while Swedish vets say two to four weeks is normal [8]. Some crematories offer same-day or next-day return for an extra fee. Ask for a date when you book, and plan any gathering for after it.

Where can I find a pet cemetery in Ontario?

Pet cemeteries are most common around the larger cities in Ontario, and some human cemeteries now have pet sections. Ask your vet, check your city page on this site or send us a note. When you call a cemetery, ask who owns the land, what perpetual care covers and whether graveside services are allowed.

Where can I scatter my pet's ashes in Ontario?

Private land with the owner's permission is simplest. Parks, beaches and public land have their own rules, and many ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot, scatter low and downwind, away from paths and water, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.

Can I bury my pet at home in Ontario?

Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the wider rules. If you rent or might move, cremation followed by burying the ashes in a planter keeps the grave portable.
