Antwerp, Flanders
Where a goodbye can happen in Antwerp
In a busy port city, the loss of a pet can feel strangely invisible: colleagues carry on, trams keep running, and the flat is suddenly silent. Grief for an animal is real grief. Talk to someone who knew your pet, your vet, or a pet bereavement service, and give yourself time. Some people find going back to the Stadspark or the Scheldt quays, where they spent time together, helps.
Children in Antwerp often form close bonds with small pets in apartment homes, so the loss can feel huge. Clear, honest words work better than vague explanations. Giving a child a role, like choosing a photo for the shelf or drawing a card, helps them take part. Grown-ups too may find the sadness returns on the first birthday or holiday without their pet.
An Antwerp family often has people spread across the metro, and weekday traffic makes a same-day gathering harder than it sounds. Many families split the goodbye in two: a short private farewell at home or the vet on the day, then a relaxed celebration of life a week or two later, once the ashes are home and everyone can plan to come.
With roughly 523,000 residents, Antwerp is the largest of the 2 Flanders communities we cover.
The closest communities we cover are Brussels (26 miles, a larger centre) and Ghent (32 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Antwerp too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

The published sources behind those figures are CareCredit (Synchrony) and Memorials.com.

How Belgium thinks about funerals and cremation
When a place splits its funerals between burial and cremation, as Belgium does with about 67.98%[1] cremated, local providers usually offer both, and the choice often comes down to one question: do you want a place to visit, or something to keep close? A grave fixes the memorial to one spot; ashes can move house with you.

Planning an outdoor goodbye in Antwerp's climate
Whatever the forecast in Antwerp, have a sheltered spot ready for the moment your pet is carried from the house to the waiting vehicle: a porch, a garage, even a large umbrella. Rain or glare on the doorstep turns a careful handover into a rushed one, and it's the moment many people remember most clearly.

Pet farewell prices for Antwerp families
Some European crematoria include a farewell room with individual cremation and leave it out of the cheaper shared option, so the price difference buys more than just the ashes. Ask exactly what's included before you compare. In the Netherlands, a few pet insurers reimburse part of the cremation cost, so check your policy too.

What Flanders allows for burial and scattering
Most of what happens at a pet funeral is up to you. The exceptions are home burial, which Flanders and your city or county may regulate, and scattering ashes in parks or on land you don't own, which usually needs the owner's permission. The key points are below.
From first call to farewell: the steps
- Decide who needs to be there. A small circle is easier to gather in a day; a bigger gathering can come later.
- Pick the place: home, garden, a favorite walk, a crematory farewell room or a cemetery.
- Check anything that needs permission, such as scattering in a park or burying on land you don't own.
- Plan a loose running order: arrival, an opening, shared memories, a song or reading, a small ritual, then the goodbye.
- Arrange the handover or the burial to follow the ceremony immediately, rather than leaving people standing about.
- Look after yourself afterwards. Have a meal, accept offered help, and leave the lead hanging until you feel like moving it.
After the farewell: ways to keep the memory close
A goodbye in Antwerp might mean lighting a candle beside your pet at home and letting each family member say a few words, or waiting until the ashes are returned and holding a small gathering with friends. Some families take the urn to a favourite spot before deciding where it will rest. Ask the provider in advance if you want to be present at collection.

Questions people ask
Why does the Antwerp page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 67.98%[1] of Belgium residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Antwerp?
Usually yes. Brussels is about 26 miles away and Ghent is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How much does a pet funeral cost in Antwerp?
It depends mostly on whether you choose individual cremation, communal cremation or a cemetery grave, and on your pet's weight. Published examples are in the table on this page. A home ceremony before collection adds little. A viewing room, attended cremation or columbarium niche is priced by each provider, so ask for those items to be listed separately.
Is it normal to grieve this hard after a pet's funeral?
Yes. In an RSPCA survey of more than 4,000 bereaved owners, 66.9%[6] said they were surprised by how intense their grief was. The farewell often brings the loss home rather than ending it. Be patient with yourself, keep eating and sleeping as best you can, and talk to someone who understands. Our grief check-in can help you notice when it may be time to ask for more support.
How soon should a pet funeral happen?
There's no fixed rule. Many families hold a short farewell on the day, before collection or burial, and a larger gathering later when the ashes come home. If people need time to travel, ask the vet or crematory to hold your pet in a cold room and book a viewing there when everyone arrives.
Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?
Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [7]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.
