How families in Brighton say goodbye to a pet
If you live alone, as many people in Brighton's flats do, losing a pet can leave the home painfully quiet. Reach out to friends, neighbours or an online pet loss group rather than keeping it to yourself. If a child is grieving, honest words and a small role in the farewell help. A counsellor can help if the sadness lingers.
A farewell for a pet in Brighton might be a private hour in the flat, then friends meeting on the Downs or by the sea once the ashes return, or simply a candle and a photo in the flat. Some people want to be present at a private cremation. Mention what you'd like in your request, and the options we email will take it into account.
Around Brighton, people beyond the family may have known your pet too: the dog walker, the groomer, the neighbours who fed them treats over the fence. A short message or a note on a community board lets them know, and some will want to come or send a card. It also spares you telling the story again and again.
Brighton is home to about 290,000 people, the 12th-largest of the 33 England communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Brighton are based about 47 miles away in London, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Brighton sits within easy reach of Guildford (34 miles), Portsmouth (42 miles) and Richmond (45 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Brighton; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
87,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Brighton has (estimate)
How we calculated this
290,000 ÷ 2.4 = 120,833 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 87,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
7,100
Brighton families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
87,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 7,100 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How England thinks about funerals and cremation
Human crematoria in England, where roughly 83.0%[5] of deaths end in cremation, tend to have gardens of remembrance with benches and small plaques. Some pet crematories copy the idea with a memorial wall or garden where families can scatter ashes or add a name. Ask whether there's one and what a plaque costs; it gives the family somewhere to go on the anniversary.
Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) is where the England figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Brighton tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Brighton weather and your pet's farewell
Local weather affects two things about a pet funeral: how long a home goodbye can last, and whether an outdoor burial, planting or scattering is practical this week. Providers in Brighton know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest now, and whether a viewing room is available if the weather is poor.

Pet funeral and burial prices for families in Brighton
Most UK pet owners buy cremation through their vet, and 89%[6] of buyers didn't compare providers at all. If you want a farewell room, a witnessed service or simply a clearer price, a quick call to one or two independent crematoria is worth it. Communal cremation is 2x to 5x cheaper[7] but doesn't return ashes.

Burial, scattering and gathering rules in England
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug stays in the body, and wildlife or other animals can be poisoned if a grave is dug up. That risk is one reason home burial is regulated at all, and why a well-covered grave or cremation matters. Here's what England says.
In England, you can bury a pet at home if you own the land or have the owner's agreement, and there's no set minimum depth for a small pet, but stay away from water sources. Pet cemeteries must register with the government's animal health agency and bury at least 0.5 m deep [9]. Scattering ashes on someone else's land needs their permission. Many crematoria will also let you sit with your pet first; ask.
For England's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the England guide. Local rules in Brighton can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A simple plan for the hours ahead
- Decide who needs to be there. A small circle is easier to gather in a day; a bigger gathering can come later.
- Pick the place: cemetery, crematory farewell room, the route of a favorite walk, the garden, or simply home.
- Check anything that needs permission, such as scattering in a park or burying on land you don't own.
- Plan a loose running order: arrival, an opening, shared memories, a song or reading, a small ritual, then the goodbye.
- Arrange the handover or burial for straight after the ceremony, so nobody waits around.
- Look after yourself afterwards. Have a meal, accept offered help, and leave the lead hanging until you feel like moving it.
Keeping their memory alive in Brighton
Brighton is a friendly, open-minded city, and many people here see pets as full family members. That can make the loss feel very raw. Grief for an animal is real and can last weeks or months. Sea air on the front, a climb onto the Downs and a chat with friends who knew your pet can all lighten the weight a little. UK pet bereavement lines are available.

Questions people ask
Why does the Brighton page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) reports about 83.0%[5] of England residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Brighton?
Usually yes. Guildford is about 34 miles away, Portsmouth is about 42 miles away and Richmond is about 45 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many pets die in Brighton each year?
Our estimate is around 7,100. It comes from Brighton's population (about 290,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 87,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Where are the providers that serve Brighton actually based?
Some are local, and some run from London, about 47 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Brighton and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can I be there when my pet is cremated if I live in Brighton?
Possibly, but it may mean a drive. Smaller places often send pets to a crematory in a larger centre such as London, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly. Some families take their pet there themselves, hold the farewell in the car park or a quiet room, and stay while the cremation begins.
What do you say at a pet's funeral?
Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.
