Pet funerals and farewells in Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden

A goodbye that fits life in Stockholm

Many Stockholm residents live alone, and for them a pet is often the closest companion in the home. Losing that animal can leave an apartment very quiet. Tell a friend or colleague what has happened, and consider inviting one or two people to a small farewell. Pet-loss support in Sweden is available through vets, animal welfare organisations and online groups.

The long, dark Stockholm winter can make grief feel heavier, especially if your days were shaped around caring for an animal. Try to keep some structure: daylight time outdoors when you can get it, a regular call with a friend, a candle in the evening. A short farewell at home gives the household a clear moment together, even if it comes a few days after the cremation.

In a large city, pet cemetery plots are scarce and priced accordingly. If burial matters to you, ask Stockholm cemeteries who owns the land, what perpetual care covers and whether graveside services are allowed on weekends. If a plot is out of reach, cremation followed by a small burial of the ashes in a family garden gives you a place to visit for much less.

Stockholm is home to about 975,000 people.

84.69%[1]

In 2023, 84.69% of deaths in Sweden were cremated (58 crematoria).

+$25–$100[2]

Memorials.com's pet cremation cost guide says viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds $25–$100.

$831[3]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.

What local burial and cremation customs suggest

About 84.69%[1] of people in Sweden are cremated, so most families here have been to a cremation service and know how one feels. That familiarity carries over to pets: a viewing before cremation, a few words said and ashes brought home is a pattern people recognise. It also means crematories are well established, and a farewell room or witnessed cremation is easier to find.

The Sweden percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Stockholm, not as a count of pets.

Planning around heat, cold and rain in Stockholm

Seasonal flowers are the easiest way to mark a pet's farewell in Stockholm: whatever is blooming in the garden or at the market that week. Lay a handful beside your pet or on the grave, and consider planting the same thing later so it comes into bloom again around the anniversary.

Pet funeral and burial prices for families in Stockholm

Timing has a price in some countries. Swedish vets say ashes usually take 2-4 weeks[5] to come back, while one Norwegian crematorium charges NOK 1,790 extra for same-day return [6]. In the Netherlands, individual cremation averages about EUR 300 [7]. Rather than paying for speed in Stockholm, many families simply set the family get-together around the day the ashes arrive.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Sweden: Sweden costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What you can and can't do in Sweden

Rules for ashes are usually looser than rules for a body, because cremated remains are dry, processed bone rather than tissue. That's why burying or scattering ashes is often the simpler route to a graveside or outdoor ceremony. Here are the notes for Sweden on both.

In Sweden, ashes from an individual cremation can take two to four weeks to come back [5]. Many families hold a short farewell at the clinic or at home before collection, then a second gathering, such as a burial of the ashes, once they return. Check your municipality's rules on burying ashes.

A simple plan for the hours ahead

  1. Take a breath. When a pet dies at home, settle them onto a towel or their own bed somewhere cool. There is no decision you need to make within the hour.
  2. Decide cremation or burial first. That one choice sets the clock for everything else, including when the farewell can happen.
  3. Call the vet, crematory or pet cemetery to hold a time, and ask whether they can keep your pet cool until then.
  4. Send one short message giving the place and time to the handful of people you want present.
  5. Choose a spot and one small ritual: a candle, a letter tucked under a paw, a favorite toy, a song.
  6. Hold the farewell, then hand your pet to the collection team or lay them to rest.
  7. Ask for the written total ahead of the pickup, with any viewing or ceremony charge included.

Remembering your pet in Stockholm

Swedes often mark a death quietly, with a candle, a few words and a simple meal rather than a large ceremony, and a pet's farewell in Stockholm can follow the same pattern. Invite the people who knew your pet, set out a photo, and let everyone share a memory. For children, the summer cottage or the balcony where the pet spent its days can be a gentle place to talk. If grief lingers for weeks, your vet or a counsellor can help.

Questions people ask

Why does the Stockholm page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 84.69%[1] of Sweden residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can I hold a funeral for my pet at home in Stockholm?

Yes, and it's the most common kind of pet funeral. Choose a quiet room or a corner of the garden, lay your pet on their bed, invite the few people who should be there and plan one small ritual. Then ask the vet or crematory to collect afterwards, or go ahead with a home burial if Sweden rules allow it.

What does a pet cemetery burial involve?

Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.

Can I have a religious blessing at my pet's farewell?

Yes. Many clergy will say a short blessing for an animal if asked, at home or by a grave, and some pet cemeteries can suggest a celebrant. Start with your own faith community. In Japan, some pet memorial parks include chanting by a monk at a witnessed cremation, which shows how naturally faith and pet funerals can sit together.

Is there a pet cemetery near Stockholm?

Many large metros have at least one pet cemetery within driving distance, and some human cemeteries now have a pet section. Ask your vet which cemeteries they work with, or send us a note and we'll look. When you call, ask who owns the land, what perpetual care covers and whether graveside services are allowed.

Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?

Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [9]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.
