About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain are cremated, so both traditions sit side by side here. Some families will instinctively want to bury their pet, others to bring the ashes home. A farewell works with either: a graveside moment in the garden or a pet cemetery, or a short ceremony before the pet is collected for cremation.

Why does the Santander page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Bilbao to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Bilbao (roughly 46 miles from Santander) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Santander?
Usually yes. Bilbao is about 46 miles away, San Sebastian is about 92 miles away and Oviedo is about 103 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

What can I send with my pet for cremation or burial?
Most crematories let a blanket, a letter, a drawing or a small soft toy go with your pet. Many ask you to remove metal tags, plastic toys and rubber collars, which don't burn cleanly, so keep those as keepsakes instead. For a garden grave, choose natural materials such as cotton, wool or untreated wood. If something must come back to you, say so before the handover, not after.
