A small farewell at home before collection, with others joining by video, lets everyone take part. If you want to be present for a private cremation or collect the ashes yourself, say so when you first make contact, and ask which languages the provider can work in.
Many owners in Marbella mark a pet's loss with a quiet visit to a shared place: the promenade at sunrise, a beach out of season, or a viewpoint in the hills. A simple gathering on a terrace, with a candle and a few words, is as meaningful as any formal ceremony. Funeral traditions in Spain and your pet
About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain are cremated, so both traditions sit side by side here. Some families will instinctively want to bury their pet, others to bring the ashes home. A farewell works with either: a graveside moment in the garden or a pet cemetery, or a short ceremony before the pet is collected for cremation.
We take the Spain rate from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Marbella, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Marbella weather and your pet's farewell
If you're planning an outdoor ceremony in Marbella, have a rain plan and a heat plan. A covered porch, a gazebo or a room with the doors open to the garden works for both. Keep the outdoor part to ten minutes or so, especially for older relatives and small children, and gather inside afterwards.
What a pet funeral costs in Marbella
Smaller pets cost far less to cremate, which leaves more of the budget for the farewell itself. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg [5], and in France a 20 kg dog costs EUR 150–250 individually against EUR 70–120 collectively [6]. What Andalusia allows for burial and scattering
Most of what happens at a pet funeral is up to you. The exceptions are home burial, which Andalusia and your city or county may regulate, and scattering ashes in parks or on land you don't own, which usually needs the owner's permission. The key points are below.
Your checklist for the first day
- Tell your child soon, somewhere quiet, in plain words: say the pet's name and that they died, rather than 'went to sleep' or 'went away'.
- Let them choose whether to see their pet before the collection or burial; for some children, seeing settles questions they can't put into words.
- Offer choices rather than jobs: which blanket, how to decorate the box, or whether to draw a card that goes with their pet.
- Keep the ceremony to about ten minutes and let them say something, or nothing, without anyone correcting them.
- Expect questions later, often at bedtime, then give short, truthful answers when they come.
- Let their teacher or childminder know, so a quiet or tearful day makes sense to the adults around them.
The weeks and months after the goodbye
Grief can feel lonely when you live far from where you grew up, and a pet is often the steadiest companion through a move abroad. That makes the loss heavier, not lighter. Talking to your vet, friends, or an online pet loss group in your own language can help. If children are in the family, include them in the goodbye and give them honest, simple words for what happened.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Marbella?
Usually yes. Malaga is about 29 miles away, Granada is about 85 miles away and Seville is about 86 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Spain attitudes to cremation compare?

Not usually. Providers based in Malaga (roughly 29 miles from Marbella) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
What can I send with my pet for cremation or burial?
Most crematories let a blanket, a letter, a drawing or a small soft toy go with your pet. Many ask you to remove metal tags, plastic toys and rubber collars, which don't burn cleanly, so keep those as keepsakes instead. For a garden grave, choose natural materials such as cotton, wool or untreated wood. If something must come back to you, say so before the handover, not after.
Should young children come to a pet's farewell?
Usually yes, if they want to, with a simple role and a way to step out. Use plain words like 'died' rather than 'put to sleep', explain what they'll see, and keep it short. In a large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[8] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss, so you're far from alone in wondering.
Do people hold funerals for hamsters, birds and other small pets?
Plenty do. A small pet's farewell needs little more than a lined box, a few words and a flower, and children often need it more than adults expect. Choose a garden grave where local rules allow and you expect to stay, or ask a crematory about individual cremation for small animals, since the amount of ash is tiny. Mark the spot with a stone or a pot plant.
