Pet farewells in Kobe: the local picture
In a city that holds an annual light festival partly to remember the earthquake, many residents understand the value of marking a loss publicly and regularly. For a pet, that might mean a candle on the anniversary, an afternoon on the slopes of Mount Rokko, or a visit to a temple memorial. Small rituals like these give grief a place to rest and make the first year easier.
A farewell in Kobe often follows the familiar Japanese pattern: the pet is laid out with flowers, food and a favourite toy, incense is lit, and the family says goodbye before cremation. If you are an international resident, you can adapt this to your own customs; providers are used to families from many backgrounds. Let them know what matters to you in advance.
Parks are part of life in Kobe, and many families want to say goodbye on their dog's favorite walk. A small, quiet gathering in a public park usually needs no permit, but scattering ashes or planting something often does. Keep it to a few people, avoid busy paths and times, and check the park authority's rules before you bring the urn.
Kobe's population is around 1,537,000.
If you want to compare providers, look at Osaka (17 miles), Nara (35 miles) and Kyoto (39 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

In 2023, 99.97% of deaths in Japan were cremated (1364 crematoria).
+$25–$100[2]

$831[3]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).
68% cremation; 32% burial[4]
In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.
We built the this numbers from CareCredit (Synchrony) and Memorials.com, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Funeral traditions in Japan and your pet
With cremation the choice for roughly 99.97%[1] of people in Japan, plenty of families skip an open viewing for relatives and go straight to a memorial. You may feel the same about your pet, and that's fine. Others find a few quiet minutes with their pet's body makes the loss real in a helpful way. Ask each person what they want rather than assuming.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Japan figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Kobe tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Planning an outdoor goodbye in Kobe's climate
Seasons change the timing of a farewell more than its shape. Many families in Kobe hold the goodbye indoors on the day and move the outdoor part, such as burying ashes, planting a tree or scattering on a favorite walk, to a calmer day with kinder weather. There's no deadline on ashes.

Where the money goes in a Kobe pet funeral
In Kobe, a private cremation often comes with a short farewell ceremony, and a columbarium niche may be offered as well. In Singapore, for example, niches start at about SGD 300 on top of cremation [5]. Ask for the ceremony, the cremation and the niche to be priced separately so you can choose.

Permissions to check in Hyogo before the ceremony
Your city, county or local council can set tighter rules than Hyogo as a whole, especially for small suburban lots and land near drinking water supplies. A short call to the local environmental health or planning office settles it. The regional picture follows.
Japan has one of the most developed pet funeral cultures anywhere. About 130 companies belong to the national pet funeral association [7], some Buddhist temples hold memorial prayers for animals, and attended cremations can include chanting by a monk. Families sometimes place the bones in the urn with chopsticks, as at human funerals. Burying pets in public places such as parks is illegal.
From first call to farewell: the steps
- Tell your child soon, somewhere quiet, in plain words: say the pet's name and that they died, rather than 'went to sleep' or 'went away'.
- Let them choose whether to see their pet before the collection or burial; for some children, seeing settles questions they can't put into words.
- Offer choices rather than jobs: picking the blanket, decorating the box or making a card to travel with their pet.
- Keep the ceremony to about ten minutes with room to speak or stay silent, and no adult stepping in to fix it.
- Expect questions later, often at bedtime, and answer them honestly and briefly.
- Let their teacher or childminder know, which means a withdrawn or tearful child makes sense to the grown-ups at school.
Remembering your pet in Kobe
Pet loss is widely understood in Japan, and Kobe has temples that hold regular memorial services for animals. Attending one can be a quiet way to mark the loss with others who understand, alongside the family farewell before cremation. Your vet can often point you to grief support, and online communities in Japanese and English exist for pet owners across the Kansai region.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Kobe?
The closest communities we cover are Osaka (about 17 miles), Nara (about 35 miles) and Kyoto (about 39 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Kobe too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Japan attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Japan human cremation rate at about 99.97%[1]. We show it on the Kobe page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
What does a pet cemetery burial involve?
Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.
What can I send with my pet for cremation or burial?
Most crematories let a blanket, a letter, a drawing or a small soft toy go with your pet. Many ask you to remove metal tags, plastic toys and rubber collars, which don't burn cleanly, so keep those as keepsakes instead. For a garden grave, choose natural materials such as cotton, wool or untreated wood. If something must come back to you, say so before the handover, not after.
Should young children come to a pet's farewell?
Usually yes, if they want to, with a simple role and a way to step out. Use plain words like 'died' rather than 'put to sleep', explain what they'll see, and keep it short. In a large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[8] of parents wanted better guidance on helping children through pet loss, so you're far from alone in wondering.
What do you say at a pet's funeral?
Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.
