A proper farewell for your pet in Hanover

Hanover, Lower Saxony

What planning a pet funeral in Hanover is like

Some Hanover families like a small ritual when saying goodbye: lighting a candle, reading a few lines, placing a favourite blanket or toy with the pet before collection. Others wait and hold a short gathering when the ashes come back, or visit a pet cemetery together. Tell the provider in advance if you want to be there at collection or to have extra time together first.

German children are often given quite direct explanations of death, and that honesty tends to help. Letting a child draw a picture, choose flowers or put a note in with the pet gives them something active to do with their sadness. Adults may be surprised when grief returns at Christmas, on a birthday or in the first spring, and that is simply part of how loss works.

A Hanover family often has people spread across the metro, and weekday traffic makes a same-day gathering harder than it sounds. Many families split the goodbye in two: a short private farewell at home or the vet on the day, then a relaxed celebration of life a week or two later, once the ashes are home and everyone can plan to come.

About 536,000 people live in Hanover.

If you want to compare providers, look at Bremen (62 miles), Hamburg (82 miles, a larger centre) and Munster (94 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

76.0%[1]

In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).

+$25–$100[2]

Memorials.com's pet cremation cost guide says viewing or witnessing the cremation typically adds $25–$100.

$831[3]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.

Where these figures come from: CareCredit (Synchrony) and Cooney, Kogan, Brooks, Ellis.

What local burial and cremation customs suggest

Scattering is common where cremation is the norm, and with about 76.0%[1] of people in Germany cremated, some families want a pet's ashes to end up beside a person's. Rules on mixing remains in human cemeteries vary a lot, so ask first. The reverse happens too: about 800 people's ashes rest alongside their pets at one historic US pet cemetery [5].

We take the Germany rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Hanover, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

When the weather shapes the goodbye

Seasonal flowers are the easiest way to mark a pet's farewell in Hanover: whatever is blooming in the garden or at the market that week. Lay a handful beside your pet or on the grave, and consider planting the same thing later so it comes into bloom again around the anniversary.

The real cost of a pet goodbye in Hanover

In Hanover, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium. You can also contact a crematorium or pet cemetery directly, which is the easiest way to ask about a farewell room or an attended service. Always ask for individual cremation by name if you want the ashes back.

The full price table by product is on our Lower Saxony page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Local rules worth checking in Lower Saxony

Your city, county or local council can set tighter rules than Lower Saxony as a whole, especially for small suburban lots and land near drinking water supplies. A short call to the local environmental health or planning office settles it. The regional picture follows.

Germany has roughly 120 pet cemeteries (Tierfriedhöfe), where a grave costs about EUR 150 to 250 [7], so a graveside farewell is well within reach in many areas. Home burial is allowed on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil, outside water-protection areas. Many crematoria (Tierkrematorien) have a farewell room; ask when booking an individual cremation.

A pet funeral within a day: how to do it

  1. Choose a day while your pet still has good moments, book the home visit, and settle the aftercare plan in the same phone call.
  2. Fill the days before with small favorites: an unhurried walk, a sunny spot on the floor, the food they're normally not allowed.
  3. Decide who will hold your pet and who would rather wait in another room. Both are loving choices, and nobody should be talked into either.
  4. Set out the blanket you're happy to send with them, with any drawing, note or toy that should go into the cremation or grave too.
  5. When the vet has finished, take as long as you need. An hour's delay on the pickup is fine, and the vet can leave the room if you'd rather be alone.
  6. Walk out to the car or van with your pet should you want to. Teams often carry pets on a basket or stretcher and are glad to let you take one end.

Keeping their memory alive in Hanover

For people living alone in a Hanover flat, a pet may be the main reason to get out each day and the first face at home each evening. Losing that routine can hit harder than friends realise. Telling someone how you feel matters, whether that is family, a colleague, your vet or a pet bereavement service. Returning, when ready, to a favourite path through the Eilenriede can help turn loss into memory.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Germany?

For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hanover follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hanover?

Usually yes. Bremen is about 62 miles away, Hamburg is about 82 miles away and Munster is about 94 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

What happens if my pet dies at night or at the weekend in Hanover?

Keep your pet cool and indoors, and call your nearest emergency vet; a city the size of Hanover usually has one open around the clock. They can hold your pet until the crematory or cemetery opens. The farewell doesn't have to happen that night; you can plan a viewing or home ceremony for the next day.

What does a pet cemetery burial involve?

Usually a plot, opening and closing the grave, and sometimes a casket or shroud. Headstones and long-term grounds care are often extra. Ask who owns the land, whether the plot is protected if the business is sold, and whether you can hold a graveside service with your own readings and flowers on the day.

Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?

Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [5]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.

Should my other pets see the body before the farewell?

Many owners let them, and it rarely does harm. Give your other dog or cat a few calm minutes to sniff and walk away in their own time. Some show little interest; others seem to search the house less afterwards. There's no evidence it's required, so if it feels wrong for your household, skip it. Keep routines steady for the animals left behind in the days that follow.
