Frankfurt, Hesse
A goodbye that fits life in Frankfurt
Children in Frankfurt families often grow up with the same pet through the whole of primary school, so the loss can feel enormous to them. Explaining in simple words what has happened, and letting them draw a picture or choose the urn, gives them a way to take part. Tell the class teacher too, as a quiet word helps them understand a difficult week.
Frankfurt is one of Germany's most international cities, and many people here live far from parents and siblings who also knew their pet. If you want relatives to share the goodbye, a short video call during a farewell at home works well. Otherwise, a candle in the window, a few words with the family or a quiet hour in the Grüneburgpark can be all you need.
With a long list of providers around Frankfurt, the risk is comparing the wrong things. Price matters, but so do three quieter questions: will your pet be cremated alone, can you spend time with them before it happens, and how will the ashes come back to you? Put the same three to two or three places and the right one usually stands out.
Frankfurt's population is around 764,000, the largest of the 2 Hesse communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Wiesbaden (20 miles), Mainz (21 miles) and Mannheim (44 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Frankfurt routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

How Germany thinks about funerals and cremation
A high cremation rate, about 76.0%[1] in Germany, can make families assume every pet cremation is individual. It often isn't. Communal cremation returns no ashes, and 'partitioned' can mean several pets in the chamber at once. If you want your own pet's ashes back for a scattering or burial later, ask for 'private' or 'individual' in writing.

How the seasons in Frankfurt affect the day
If you're planning an outdoor ceremony in Frankfurt, have a rain plan and a heat plan. A covered porch, a gazebo or a room with the doors open to the garden works for both. Keep the outdoor part to ten minutes or so, especially for older relatives and small children, and gather inside afterwards.

What a pet funeral costs in Frankfurt
Smaller pets cost far less to cremate, which leaves more of the budget for the farewell itself. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg [5], and in France a 20 kg dog costs EUR 150–250 individually against EUR 70–120 collectively [6]. Ask providers near Frankfurt for the same breakdown in writing.

Burial, scattering and gathering rules in Hesse
Your city, county or local council can set tighter rules than Hesse as a whole, especially for small suburban lots and land near drinking water supplies. A short call to the local environmental health or planning office settles it. The regional picture follows.
Germany has roughly 120 pet cemeteries (Tierfriedhöfe), where a grave costs about EUR 150 to 250 [8], so a graveside farewell is well within reach in many areas. Home burial is allowed on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil, outside water-protection areas. Many crematoria (Tierkrematorien) have a farewell room; ask when booking an individual cremation.
Planning a farewell in Frankfurt, step by step
- Find a small box and soft bedding, such as a shoebox lined with a cloth or some of their own nesting material.
- Choose between cremation and a garden grave. Tiny pets leave very little ash, so ask the crematory how they keep it separate and what it comes back in.
- For a garden grave, choose ground you're likely to still own in years to come, look up what's allowed locally, and decide on a marker, whether a potted plant or a flat stone.
- Invite whoever looked after them, even if that's one child and one parent. A small animal can leave a big gap.
- Say a few words or read a note, then lay a flower or a pinch of their favorite food on the lid.
- Clear the cage, hutch or tank slowly over a few days, rather than the same afternoon, so the room doesn't feel suddenly empty.
Anniversaries, gatherings and quiet reminders
Mourning a pet is normal and there is no timetable for it. If the sadness lingers, speak with your vet, a friend or one of the grief counselors in the Rhine-Main area. Some owners find it helps to put together a photo book or write down their pet's habits while the memories are fresh, especially in a busy city where days blur.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Frankfurt?
The closest communities we cover are Wiesbaden (about 20 miles), Mainz (about 21 miles) and Mannheim (about 44 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Frankfurt too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Germany?
For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Frankfurt follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
What do you say at a pet's funeral?
Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.
Should my other pets see the body before the farewell?
Many owners let them, and it rarely does harm. Give your other dog or cat a few calm minutes to sniff and walk away in their own time. Some show little interest; others seem to search the house less afterwards. There's no evidence it's required, so if it feels wrong for your household, skip it. Keep routines steady for the animals left behind in the days that follow.
Can I scatter my pet's ashes in a park in Frankfurt?
Sometimes, with permission. Parks, beaches and nature reserves have their own rules, and many ask you to contact the park authority first. Private land needs the owner's permission. Choose a quiet time and spot away from paths and water intakes, scatter low and downwind, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake.
Can we plan a pet funeral in Frankfurt within a day?
Yes, most pet farewells are arranged that quickly. In the morning, decide cremation or burial and call to hold a time. By midday, message the few people who should come. In the afternoon, choose the spot, a blanket, a candle and something to read. Hold the farewell in the evening, then hand your pet over or lay them to rest.
