Planning a goodbye for your pet in Regensburg

Regensburg, Bavaria

Choosing where the farewell happens in Regensburg

The dark, foggy months along the Danube can make grief feel heavier, especially in the first winter after a loss. Try to keep simple routines, spend time outside on clear days and let people know how you're feeling. If the sadness doesn't ease or starts to affect sleep, work or study, talking to your doctor or a counsellor is a sensible step, not an overreaction.

Children often cope with a pet's death better when they're included honestly. Let them help plan a small ceremony, choose a place for the urn, or make a drawing or a candle for the windowsill. Older relatives who live alone may lose their daily company when a pet dies, and a regular visit or phone call in the weeks after can make a real difference.

Regensburg is big enough to offer real choice in how you say goodbye, and small enough that you'll often deal with the same person from the first phone call to the return of the ashes. That makes it easier to ask for things that aren't on the price list: an extra half hour in the farewell room, a later collection time, or a candle lit before cremation.

About 153,000 people live in Regensburg, which makes it the 4th-largest of the 5 Bavaria communities we cover. Nuremberg, roughly 55 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Regensburg run from there.

Our pages for Nuremberg (55 miles, a larger centre), Munich (65 miles, a larger centre) and Augsburg (71 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Regensburg as well.

+$25–$100[2]

$831[3]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for pet cemetery burial of a dog at $831 (range $659-$1,513).

68% cremation; 32% burial[4]

In a US survey of 2,043 dog and cat owners who had made end-of-life decisions, 68% had made a cremation decision and 32% a burial decision for at least one past pet.

A pet at home in Regensburg

Faith, tradition and pet goodbyes in Germany

With about 76.0%[1] of people in Germany cremated, a cremation is the familiar end to a funeral here, and many families want a pet's farewell to echo it on a small scale. You can borrow whatever feels right: a blessing, a moment of silence, a candle, a shared meal afterwards. Whatever your family would do for a person, a smaller, simpler version usually fits a pet.

Source for the Germany number: Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Regensburg, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

Regensburg weather and your pet's farewell

Whatever the forecast in Regensburg, have a sheltered spot ready for the moment your pet is carried from the house to the waiting vehicle: a porch, a garage, even a large umbrella. Rain or glare on the doorstep turns a careful handover into a rushed one, and it's the moment many people remember most clearly.

What you can and can't do in Bavaria

Before you plan a graveside ceremony in the garden or a scattering on a favorite walk, check the local rules. They're mostly about protecting water and other people's land, so they focus on depth, distance from wells and streams, and permission from whoever owns the land. Here's the picture for Bavaria.

Germany has roughly 120 pet cemeteries (Tierfriedhöfe), where a grave costs about EUR 150 to 250 [5], so a graveside farewell is well within reach in many areas. Home burial is allowed on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil, outside water-protection areas. Many crematoria (Tierkrematorien) have a farewell room; ask when booking an individual cremation.

A pet funeral within a day: how to do it

  1. Ask the clinic for a quiet room and some time, whether or not everything happened quickly. There's no rule that says you must walk out right after.
  2. Don't sign the aftercare form on the spot if you're unsure. The practice can hold your pet in cold storage for a day; ask for that and take the time to decide.
  3. Find out which crematory the practice uses, and whether you can choose a different one or take your pet home for burial instead.
  4. Request a paw print or a clipping of fur before your pet leaves the room; it's much harder to arrange later.
  5. If family couldn't get there in time, ask if the clinic will let them come in for their own goodbye before the pickup.
  6. Get the aftercare price on its own line, separate from the medical bill, so you can see what the farewell part costs.
  7. Pencil in a gathering for later, for when the ashes are back or at the graveside, for the people who missed the day.

Marking the loss, now and later

In a university city like Regensburg, many people live away from family, and a pet can be the closest companion someone has. Friends may not realise how hard that loss lands. A small farewell, at home or in a favourite spot by the river, gives you a moment to say goodbye. Inviting one or two people who knew your pet helps; so does talking about the loss rather than carrying it alone.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Nuremberg to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Nuremberg (roughly 55 miles from Regensburg) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Regensburg?

The closest communities we cover are Nuremberg (about 55 miles), Munich (about 65 miles) and Augsburg (about 71 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Regensburg too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Why does the Regensburg page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[1] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can I be there when my pet is cremated if I live in Regensburg?

Possibly, but it may mean a drive. Smaller places often send pets to a crematory in a larger centre such as Nuremberg, so ask your vet which one they use and call it directly. Some families take their pet there themselves, hold the farewell in the car park or a quiet room, and stay while the cremation begins.

Can I bury my pet at home in Regensburg?

It depends on the country and often the local council. Germany allows it on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil and not in water-protection areas; Dubai doesn't permit animal burial at all; Japan bans it in public places such as parks. Ask your vet or local authority before digging, or consider a pet cemetery.

What do you say at a pet's funeral?

Something true and specific: their name, one habit that made everyone laugh and one thing you'll miss. A short poem, a prayer or a favorite song works if words are hard. Many families ask each person to share one memory. Two or three minutes of speaking is plenty, and nobody expects polish.
