Choosing where the farewell happens in Toorak
Many Toorak families have relatives interstate or overseas, so a farewell sometimes happens over a video call. That can still feel meaningful. Grief often surfaces on routines: the morning coffee on Toorak Road, the spot by the fireplace, the quiet evening at home. That is normal and usually softens with time. Some families light a candle on the mantel each evening for the first week.
Farewells in Toorak are often quiet and private: family gathered in the garden under a big old tree, a favourite toy or blanket laid alongside, a few words said before anyone arrives. If you want a more structured goodbye, some providers offer a viewing room or will come to the house. Take as long as you need; nobody should hurry you.
Witnessed cremation is harder to arrange from a small town like Toorak, because the nearest crematory may be an hour or more away. If being present matters to you, ask your vet which crematory they use and call it directly. Some families drive their pet there themselves, which also means the journey becomes part of the goodbye.
With roughly 12,000 residents, Toorak is the 5th-largest of the 5 Victoria communities we cover. Melbourne, roughly 3 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Toorak run from there.
Families in Toorak often end up using a provider from Melbourne (3 miles, a larger centre), Geelong (41 miles, a larger centre) and Ballarat (66 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
4,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Toorak has (estimate)
How we calculated this
12,000 ÷ 2.5 = 4,800 households; × 49% (dog) + 34% (cat) = 4,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
330
Estimated dog and cat losses in Toorak each year
How we calculated this
4,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 330 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

What local burial and cremation customs suggest
Human crematoria in Australia, where roughly 71%[5] of deaths end in cremation, tend to have gardens of remembrance with benches and small plaques. Some pet crematories copy the idea with a memorial wall or garden where families can scatter ashes or add a name. Ask whether there's one and what a plaque costs; it gives the family somewhere to go on the anniversary.
We take the Australia rate from FuneralSmart (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Toorak, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
How the seasons in Toorak affect the day
If you're planning an outdoor ceremony in Toorak, have a rain plan and a heat plan. A covered porch, a gazebo or a room with the doors open to the garden works for both. Keep the outdoor part to ten minutes or so, especially for older relatives and small children, and gather inside afterwards.

Pet funeral and burial prices for families in Toorak
Prices within one state can vary more than between states. Listed individual cremation prices run from AUD 150 to 1,824 in New South Wales and from AUD 199 to 749 in Victoria [6], so two quotes near Toorak are worth getting. In Australia, Griefline also offers free support that covers pet loss if the days after the farewell are hard.

What Victoria allows for burial and scattering
Rules for ashes are usually looser than rules for a body, because cremated remains are dry, processed bone rather than tissue. That's why burying or scattering ashes is often the simpler route to a graveside or outdoor ceremony. Here are the notes for Victoria on both.
In Australia, many councils restrict backyard burial in suburban areas, so check before planning a garden farewell. Summer heat shortens how long a home goodbye can last. RSPCA Queensland's memorial packages publish a return window [8], which is a helpful model: ask any provider for a return date so you can plan a gathering around it.
The rules that apply across Victoria (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Victoria page. Toorak may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
Planning a farewell in Toorak, step by step
- Ask the clinic for a quiet room and some time, even if the decision was made in a rush. You don't have to leave straight away.
- Don't sign the aftercare form on the spot if you're unsure. Ask the clinic to keep your pet in their cold room for a day while you think.
- Find out which crematory the practice uses, and whether you can choose a different one or take your pet home for burial instead.
- Request a paw print or a clipping of fur before your pet leaves the room; it's much harder to arrange later.
- If family couldn't get there in time, ask whether they can visit the clinic to say goodbye before the collection.
- Get the aftercare price on its own line, separate from the medical bill, so you can see what the farewell part costs.
- Pencil in a gathering for later, either once the ashes have come home or beside the grave, so those who couldn't be there get their moment.
Keeping their memory alive in Toorak
If the sadness is still heavy after a few weeks, Melbourne has pet loss counsellors and support groups, and national phone lines are available too. Many people find it helps to talk to someone who does not think they should be over it by now. Children tend to manage better with honest language and a job to do, such as choosing a plant for the garden.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Toorak actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Melbourne, about 3 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Toorak and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How many pet owners live in Toorak?
By our estimate, about 4,000 households in Toorak have at least one dog or cat, and around 330 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 12,000, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Toorak?
The closest communities we cover are Melbourne (about 3 miles), Geelong (about 41 miles) and Ballarat (about 66 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Toorak too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Australia attitudes to cremation compare?
FuneralSmart (2023) puts the Australia human cremation rate at about 71%[5]. We show it on the Toorak page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can my pet's ashes be buried with me one day?
Sometimes. It depends on the cemetery's rules and local law, and many human cemeteries still don't allow animal remains in a grave. Some do, and a few pet cemeteries accept human ashes: about 800 people's ashes lie beside their pets at America's oldest pet cemetery [9]. Store the urn sealed and clearly named, and put your wishes in writing for your family.
Can I combine a farewell with water cremation near Toorak?
Yes. Water cremation, or aquamation, still returns ashes, so you can hold a viewing before or a celebration of life afterwards just as you would with flame cremation. Fewer providers offer it, and it may mean a longer drive from Toorak. Ask early, and expect a slightly longer wait for the ashes.
